Cultural Events Committee Proposals

1.  Attach a cultural events attendance requirement to designated core courses in the curriculum.  Ideally, each department, major, or school would designate two such core courses each.

a. Benefits:

· class cohesiveness, thus aiding retention

· Will support the university's strategic plan (i.e., Leadership) in regards to co-curricular focus

· will support the general education outcomes of knowing sciences, language, literature, and visual and performing arts; and knowing the history, values, and culture of the United States and world civilizations

· will support the university's mission to provide a high quality liberal arts education to its students, especially in terms of life-long learning

· will benefit the Cultural Events Committee's activities by building its audience base; by allowing a more effective use of funding, that is, less for advertising and more for content as well as preventing, essentially, $50 seats per performance; and by facilitating grant funding applications

a. Methods of Implementation
· requirement can appear on designated core course syllabi in a way similar to the attendance policy, with ultimate expectations, such as grades or extra credit, etc., established by individual instructors, as with the attendance policy

· can be implemented with attendance taking at university sponsored cultural events and attendance tallying and dissemination to designated core course instructors

· events would include videotaped records as well as technologically diverse offerings, such as satellite intensives and computer conferencing.  These latter types of events would allow for "attendance" by off campus students, and by students with job responsibilities that might prevent them from attending events

· events can be scheduled during the meeting hour, if at all          possible, to facilitate attendance

2.  Establish a Co-Curricular Transcript, along the lines of those recorded at the University of South Carolina at Sumter and Gainesville College.  For theirs, Gainesville College uses Banner.  Les Carpenter of USC Sumter describes this transcript as "a formal record for a student's participation in extracurricular events and activities [such as service on campus committees and membership in student organizations] . . . which, when combined with a student's official transcript, presents a broader picture of that student's experience in college."

a.  Benefits

· will support the university's strategic plan as stated above

· will support the education outcomes and mission statement above

· will offer an assessment tool that will support accreditation expectations

· would benefit the Cultural Events Committee in the ways mentioned above

  b.  Methods of Implementation(see attachments 1 & 2)

Attachment 1.
Les Carpenter from USC Sumter describes their Student Development Transcript in the paragraph below:
"All cultural events are approved for Student Development Transcript credit, which means that students who attend a particular cultural event, and fill out and turn in an attendance card to an attendant at that particular event, will have their participation in this cultural event duly entered on their USC Sumter Student Development Transcript.  The Student Development Transcript is a formal record for a student's participation in extracurricular events and activities while at USC Sumter, which when combined with a student's official academic transcript, presents a broader picture of that student's experiences in college.

Attachment 2.

Gainesville College's webpage has the following information, compiled by Susan Smith:

What is a co-curricular transcript?

A co-curricular transcript is an official document that records verifiable student activities that occur outside the classroom.

Why have a co-curricular transcript?

1.A system is needed to record learning experiences that occur outside of the classroom.

2.It gives credibility to co-curricular experiences, just as an academic transcript does for classroom experiences.

3.Along with the academic transcript, it provides a more complete view of the student's experiences and development while enrolled at Gainesville College.

4.It is a valuable instrument for the students. It can be given to future employers, scholarship committees, etc.

5.It supports our mission - to offer educational, cultural and developmental experiences.

6.It provides a method of assessment for student development.

7.It is one method of encouraging the development of a well-rounded student.

8.It may increase student participation in clubs and campus activities.
