From:
Steven Brehe, chair, the Faculty Affairs Committee
Subject:Recommended
revisions to the NGCSU faculty handbook
Date:
February 3, 2003
In
response to AVPAA Roberts-Betsch’s request, the Faculty Affairs committee
has reviewed the BOR’s recent revisions to BOR policy 803.08, Criteria
for Promotion.
In
order to make NGCSU’s policies on faculty promotion conform more closely
to those of the BOR, the committee recommends that the Senate should consider
revising section 4.5, Promotion and Tenure,” of the Faculty Handbook, subsection
II, “Criteria for Promotion.”The
revision should be made to the paragraphs that now read as follows:
In
cases where the requested promotion is from the rank of instructor to assistant
professor, or from the rank of assistant professor to associate professor,
in addition to providing evidence of teaching effectiveness, the candidate
must also provide
evidence
of noteworthy achievement in either the area of scholarship or the area
of service.
In
cases where the requested promotion is from the rank of associate professor
to full professor, in addition to providing evidence of teaching effectiveness,
the candidate must also provide evidence of noteworthy achievement in both
the area of
scholarship
and the area of service.
We
recommend that the Senate consider making additions to these paragraphs
such as the following, indicated by underscoring:
In
cases where the requested promotion is from the rank of instructor to assistant
professor, or from the rank of assistant professor to associate professor,
in addition to providing evidence of teaching effectiveness, the candidate
must also provide
evidence
of noteworthy achievement in either the area of scholarship or the area
of service. In cases where the requested promotion is from the rank
of assistant professor to associate professor, the candidate must also
possess either an earned doctorate or its equivalent in training, ability,
or expertise.
In
cases where the requested promotion is from the rank of associate professor
to full professor, in addition to providing evidence of teaching effectiveness
and possessing the earned doctorate or its equivalent in training,
ability, or expertise, the candidate must also provide evidence of
noteworthy achievement in both the area of scholarship and the area of
service.
Please
let us know if the committee can assist in this matter in any other way.
