Established by members of the Hoag Family, the Merritt E. Hoag Lecture Series is named in memory of Merritt Eldred Hoag. Dr. Hoag served as president of the then North Georgia College from 1949 to 1970, and he died in 1994.
Dr. Hoag's philosophy of education included the belief that an institution of higher learning provides an education beyond the traditional classroom environment and a specific academic major. He felt that college should enable students to develop an intellectual fullness -- learning about the arts, literature, science, history, philosophy, religion, and more.
Inaugurated in spring 1997 and continuing annually, the Hoag Lecture Series attempts to promote Dr. Hoag's philosophy of a fully educated individual. It brings to campus speakers who have distinguished themselves in various disciplines and whose presence encourages students to broaden their intellectual boundaries.
