Metacognitive Model

Graphic of the NGCSU Metacognitive Model for Teacher Education

The NGCSU Secondary Mathematics Education Program prepares teachers to assume many roles within the school community. The roles of Decision-Maker, Facilitator, and Leader are paramount in the Metacognitive model. Teacher Education Program competencies reflecting the model are aligned with each role. These competencies are listed in the table below. Current research and professional standards identify these competencies as important for effective teaching (NBPTS and ASCD Framework). The emphasis of a particular role or competency occurs in more than one mathematics course and some courses emphasize more than one role.
