The Physical Education (Exercise Science) program is no longer accepting applications for admittance throughout the academic year.  Applications for a Fall 2008 admittance will only be accepted once per year (January 22, 2008 to March 14, 2008 or until the upcoming class is full).  At the present time, the Exercise Science emphasis area is closed.  All future applicants that were not admitted initially will be placed on a waiting list.  Any accepted student that does not meet the minimum prerequisite requirements will have their acceptance letter withdrawn and the first qualified applicant on the waiting list will receive a letter of acceptance.  After reviewing the Exercise Science Admissions information, if you have further questions about the application process, please contact Dr. Thomas Temples at (706) 864-1626 or email at ttemples@ngcsu.edu.

The overarching purpose of the Exercise Science emphasis area within the Department of Health and Physical Education is to provide the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical competencies for our students to be effective and competitive in clinical, corporate, community, and commercial fitness settings.  In designing the Exercise Science emphasis area, the behavioral objectives and standards established by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) were employed (see Plan of Study and Suggested Schedule for 2008).

The culmination of the student's formal education is an internship experience in an area of career interest. The internship program is designed to provide quality educational opportunities along with quality adult supervision to assist the student in gaining valuable experience in the profession (see Internship Program page).  During this period of advanced training, students are strongly encouraged to become certified as a part of their professional preparation.  Those students that are interested in becoming professionally certified are directed to several professional organizations that provide certification options and specific requirements for each certification.
(see Certification Options).

Careers in the Exercise Science area have dramatically increased in recent years.  The profession has evolved to the point of providing tremendous diversity in career options.  An extensive listing can be found on the Career Opportunities page.  Also, the Exercise Science Links page can be a valuable tool in assisting you understand the depth and breadth of the profession.

The Exercise Science emphasis area is not an open option for a degree (i.e., program application and approved admission are required).  Students wishing to enter the program must submit an application for admission to the NGCSU School of Education.  All admission criteria, requirements, and an application form can be found on the Admissions page.   If you are interested in changing your major to Physical Education (Exercise Science) or you are transferring to North Georgia College & State University from another institution, please contact the School of Education - Admissions at (706) 867-3271 for a brief evaluation of your application.  Specific questions concerning the requirements for acceptance into the Exercise Science area should be directed to the Exercise Science coordinator, Dr. Thomas Temples, at (706) 864-1626 or e-mail at ttemples@ngcsu.edu
