If you enter the post-baccalaureate program with a bachelor’s
degree in the field in which you are seeking certification, have
already taken and passed GACE II and have been regularly admitted
to the graduate school, your content will be limited to that
prescribed by the program.
If you are changing fields, have not yet passed GACE II, or have been provisionally admitted to
the graduate program, a faculty advisor will need to evaluate your transcript to determine whether you need
to take additional teaching field content courses. They will then outline a proposed program for you, based
on your needs and available courses. All students entering the middle grades program must have their
transcripts analyzed.
Listed below are the e-mail addresses of faculty responsible for transcript analysis in various
departments. If you have short, specific questions, please use email rather than the telephone.
Transcript analysis will occur after application, using the transcripts provided with the application.
Brief descriptions of content requirements for each field are provided below. Please understand that
because of the time consuming nature of transcript analysis, it is not available to candidates until they
have been admitted.
Content Requirements in addition to a bachelor’s degree
“Major” as it is used in the descriptions below means approximately thirty hours of upper level work.
Fulfilling content requirements is not simply a matter of having the requisite number of hours or courses—it
involves having sufficient background to make instruction profitable and to pass the certification tests.
For an idea about testing requirements, visit the Georgia Assessment for the Certification of Educators (GACE) web site www.gace.nesinc.com about the tests required in Georgia
and look at the information and resources for your field.
Middle Grades: You will need two teaching areas selected from language arts, mathematics, science and
social studies. A teaching area includes at least six college courses in the teaching area. In science,
these course must include life, physical and earth/space science. In social science they must include U. S.
and Georgia History. In mathematics, four specific courses or their equivalent are required
Secondary Science: You must have a major in science or engineering and pass GACE II
to exempt additional content requirements in a specific field (biology, chemistry, physics). If you do not
have a major, you will be required to complete course work that is the equivalent of a major.
Secondary English. You must have a major in English or another field approved by the PSC and pass GACE II to exempt additional content requirements. Degrees in communications or journalism
will require additional literature content.
Secondary Mathematics. You must have a major in mathematics or another field approved
by the PSC and pass GACE II to exempt additional content requirements. You will be required to take course
work in teaching mathematics. Degrees in business or accounting are not defined as closely related. There is
a significant shortage of mathematics teachers.
Secondary History. You must have a major in history or a related field approved by the PSC and pass GACE II to exempt additional content requirements.
Art (P-12). You must have a major in art or another field approved by the PSC and
pass GACE II to exempt additional content requirements. You will be required to take additional course
work in teaching art.
Music (P-12). Music programs must be completed in the daytime, and will require
transcript analysis.
Modern Languages. You must have a degree in the language and pass GACE II to exempt
additional content.
Health and Physical Education. You must have a degree in Health and Physical
Education and have passed GACE II to exempt additional content requirements. Individuals with related
degrees such as recreation or wellness may have a few specific content requirements.
Special Education. All degrees are welcome. You must have completed two semesters of
English and a basic college mathematics course. |
