You may send an unofficial copy of your transcript to the following individuals for a transcript
analysis. Generally this process is only needed in the middle and secondary fields. You need to
provide them with your email address for a reply. They will not make appointments to meet with you
individually until this process is complete. They do NOT do this on a walk-in basis. It will
probably take two weeks.

We do not admit to the undergraduate early childhood programs with a G.P.A. below 2.75 under any
circumstances. In other programs, you must be admitted to the graduate school. There is an appeals
process for those with a G.P.A. below 2.5. The decision of the Graduate Appeals Committee is final.
Please note that provisional or intern certificates are not granted with a G.P.A. below 2.5 unless
you have been admitted to a graduate program.
The Professional Standards Commission has available two types of non-professional certificates. A
provisional certificate requires bachelor’s degree and both PRAXIS I and PRAXIS II complete in all
fields except Special Education. We can sometimes complete certification for an individual with a
provisional certificate in a year (except in special education). An intern certificate (available
with employment and enrollment in an approved Georgia Teacher Alternative Preparation Program)
requires only PRAXIS I on entry. The internship period for those on an internship certificate is
required to be two years. In either case, if the school system terminates your internship, we
terminate your participation in the program.
Yes, and you can read about them in the teacher education handbook which is found on our web
site!
North Georgia College and State University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges
and Schools. Teacher education programs are accredited both by the Georgia Professional Standards
Commission and the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education.
Our alumni include at least 17 National Board Certified teachers. Two of the last four Georgia
Teachers of the Year came from our programs as did one National Teacher of the year. We are in the
top quadrant of colleges and universities in the state in Praxis pass rates.
This will be our fifth post-baccalaureate cohort. All of our graduates who want to be employed as
teachers are currently employed. However, state data indicates that teacher shortages are localized
and spread unevenly across fields. The critical shortage fields are science, English, mathematics,
foreign languages and special education. Fields in which there is still oversupply include social
sciences and health and physical education. Middle grades and early childhood seem to have supply
and demand in relative balance in this region of the state. There is an extensive report on supply
and demand on the Georgia Professional Standards Commission Web site in the Georgia Teaching Force
area. We limit the number of students accepted in non-critical fields and give preference to those
already employed as teachers.
Praxis 1 and II can be taken at a test center (NGCSU and other colleges and universities are
likely locations) on six dates during the academic year. Registration is about one month prior to
the test date and scores come back about six weeks after it. Realistically, Praxis II needs to be
taken no later than the April test date for fall employment. Praxis I can be taken on the computer
on other dates by appointment and the scores come back much more rapidly. Visit the PRAXIS site,
www.ets.org/teachingandlearning/index.html, for a list of test centers. At the present time, North
Georgia College and State University is not a computerized PRAXIS test center. PRAXIS II is not
available as a computerized test.
Normally these are posted on your high school transcript. Order a copy from your high school. The
Professional Standards Commission Web Site, www.gapsc.com contains a calculator which will let you
“recenter” SAT scores taken before 1996.
Yes, the Graduate School does require tests. Please contact them for what is acceptable.
Georgia TAPP means Teacher Alternative Preparation Program. These programs come in many types.
These programs are approved as Georgia TAPP programs, although they are also available to
individuals not yet employed as teachers.
Graduate tuition at North Georgia College and State
University is presently $117/credit hour. It is set by the
Board of Regents and normally changes beginning in the fall
semester. Tuition is charged on a per hour basis up to 12 hours and
does not increase beyond that point.
In addition to tuition, the university charges a variety
of fees in any semester in which a student takes 6 or more
hours. These fees are approximately $300.
In the summer, a 7-12 post-baccalaureate student normally
takes 12 hours, resulting in tuition charges of $1160 and
fees of about $300. In the fall, the student normally takes
7 hours with tuition of $679 plus fees. In the spring, the
tuition for a staff development internship for an employed
student is $975 with no fees.
With this: Tuition and fees are set annually by the Board
of Regents. Check this link for a current listing. (http://www.ngcsu.edu/Admiss/tuition_fees.htm)
