P-12/Secondary Education

Certification

Students who want to teach in high school seek secondary certification (grades 6-12).  North Georgia has secondary programs in English, Mathematics, History, Social Science, Biology, Chemistry and Physics.  Those students major in their academic disciplines.  See below for their web sites.

These programs start Fall 2009.

Certain other programs prepare students to teach in grades P-12.  These are Art, Music, Health & Physical Education, Spanish and French.

The common teacher education requirements for these programs are:

For admission: Grades of C or better in Area A courses and Educ 2110, Educ 2120, and Educ 2130.

After admission:  Educ 3002 (Educational Assessment—2 hrs), Educ 3003/3003L (Classroom Management & Classroom management lab, 3 hrs).  These two courses are offered fall and spring semesters and are pre-requisite to Educ 4000.  Most programs also require LART 3106, Teaching Reading in the Content Areas, which is offered spring only.

EDUC 4000 is taken spring of the senior year.  There will be a co-requisite course determined by the major departments, as well as a morning school placement.

The Teacher Education program requires service learning and additional school experience.
