Accounting Major

Accounting is the language of business.  This critical business service function provides the information system through which organizations communicate with their stakeholders.  All types of organizations—large international corporations, small businesses, governmental agencies, not-for-profit associations, etc.—must communicate with decision-makers.  Therefore, all organizations need accounting services!!

The accounting major opens doors to many exciting career paths for the financial professional.  Along with the traditional accounting services of financial statement auditing, income tax planning and preparation, and compilation of financial statements, accountants are serving as financial managers, E-commerce experts, personal financial planners, international financial advisors, information technology consultants, assurance services professionals, environmental financial analysts, Federal law enforcement agents and auditors, and forensic accountants and auditors.  Accounting careers offer graduates the opportunity to significantly employ the technical, communication, interpersonal and managerial skills developed throughout the college curriculum.

The accounting program leading toward the BBA is traditionally structured emphasizing a strong, basic foundation upon which students can build careers individually suited to their professional goals and skills.  These foundation courses extensively include hands-on processing of financial and income tax information, problem-solving in the recording and reporting of business transactions, formation and critical analysis of information systems, development and monitoring of cost management systems, and auditing of financial statement information.

In addition, the accounting program offers individualized advising for students seeking to complete additional study to meet the 150-semester hour educational requirement to become a Certified Public Accountant (CPA).  Accounting advisors work with students to tailor a plan of courses to be taken at NGCSU based upon each student’s professional goals, interests, and strengths.  Included in the plan of study for all students seeking to meet the requirements would be at least three of the following accounting elective courses, in addition to the upper-level accounting courses required in the major:

  • ACCT 3380  Fraud Examination (3 hours)

  • ACCT 4320  Consolidations and Partnerships (3 hours)

  • ACCT 4350  Advanced Federal Income Taxation (3 hours)

  • ACCT 4903  Georgia Intern Program in Accounting (3 hours)
