Business Administration Curriculum Updates 2002 - 2004

NOTE: These changes have been incorporated into the 2004-2006 Undergraduate Bulletin. Some of these changes do apply to students admitted to NGCSU prior to the publication of the 2004-2006 Undergraduate Bulletin.

General Overview of Changes

Addition of MATH 2040, Brief Calculus, as a required course for all students receiving a B.B.A. degree in 2007 or later
MATH 1111, College Algebra, as the recommended Area A math for all students who have not already completed Area A math
Enrollment in most upper division business courses restricted to students who have completed ACCT 2101, ACCT 2102, ECON 2105, and ECON 2106 with a grade of C or better in each course beginning Fall 2003
Grade of C or better required in courses that are prerequisite to upper division business courses beginning Fall 2003
Grade of C or better required in all major specific courses (the 21 hours beyond the Common Professional Component) beginning Fall 2003

Specifics of each change are provided below. Students who were admitted under the 2002 - 2004 Undergraduate Bulletin (or some earlier bulletin) should review the specific information to determine how the changes impact their requirements for registration and graduation. In general, courses taken prior to the adopted change will be accepted under the rules in effect at the time the courses were taken; courses taken after the adoption of the new rules will be reviewed based on the newly adopted curriculum.

Changes Applying to Anyone Considering Taking Courses Taught in Business Administration

New Course (Fall 2003)

ACCT 3380 Fraud Examination

Prerequisites: ACCT 2102 and FINC 3440. An introductory study of occupational fraud. The cross-disciplinary nature of the course makes it appropriate and useful for both accounting and non-accounting majors.

Change to an Existing Course (Effective Fall 2003)

BUSA 3120 Quantitative Methods becomes BUSA 3120 Production and Operations Management

Prerequisites: MATH 2400. This course familiarizes the student with the nature and scope of production and operations management in modern industry. The topics emphasized include operations philosophies, operations strategy, inventory control, project management, scheduling, and other current topics selected by the instructor.

NOTE: BUSA 3110 will not be a prerequisite to BUSA 3120.

Impact on students admitted prior to the publication of the 2004-2006 Undergraduate Bulletin: BUSA 3120 remains a required course for all Business majors. BUSA 3120 taken prior to or after Fall 2003 will meet the requirement for graduation. Students may not receive credit for BUSA 3120 more than once.

Management majors will continue to take MGMT 4655 Advanced Production and Operations Management (previously called Production and Operations Management). The content of this course will be adjusted based on the change to BUSA 3120.

Grades in prerequisites for 3000 and 4000 level Business courses (Effective Fall 2003)

A grade of C or better is required in any course listed as a prerequisite for 3000 or 4000 level courses taught by the Business Administration Department. This applies to all 3000 and 4000 level courses with designations ACCT, BUSA, ECON, FINC, MGMT, and MKTG.

Impact on students admitted prior to the publication of the 2004-2006 Undergraduate Bulletin: Students must earn a grade of C or better in any course that the student takes Fall 2003 or later that serves as a prerequisite to a 3000 or 4000 level business course.

If a student makes a D in a course that serves as a prerequisite to a 3000 or 4000 level business course prior to Fall 2003, the student will not be required to retake the course to raise the grade [to meet the prerequisite requirement], but the student will be required to obtain a prerequisite override in order to register for the next course.

Enrollment in 3000 and 4000 level courses taught by Business Administration (Effective Fall 2003)

A grade of C or better in ACCT 2101, ACCT 2102, ECON 2105, and ECON 2106 will be required prior to taking any 3000 or 4000 level course taught in Business Administration with the exception of BUSA 3110, BUSA 3490, FINC 3440, MGMT 3661, and MKTG 3700.

Business minors and Art Marketing majors may register for one additional Business course at the 3000 or 4000 level by meeting the specific course prerequisite and obtaining permission from the Business Administration Department Head. Specific course prerequisites for all courses still remain.

Impact on students admitted prior to the publication of the 2004-2006 Undergraduate Bulletin: Students who completed ACCT 2101, ACCT 2102, ECON 2105, and/or ECON 2106 with a grade of D prior to Fall 2003 will not be required to repeat the course(s) in order to raise the grade, but these students will need to obtain a prerequisite override in order to register for 3000 and 4000 level courses in business. Minors and Art Marketing majors will need a prerequisite override to register for the one additional course in their program.

Change Specific to the Business Minor

Grades (Effective Fall 2003)

Students must earn a grade of C or better in all courses counted toward a Business minor.

Impact on students admitted prior to the publication of the 2004-2006 Undergraduate Bulletin: This applies to all courses taken Fall 2003 or later.

Changes Specific to B.B.A. Students (Accounting, Finance, Management, Marketing)

Grades in major specific courses (Effective Fall 2003)

Students must earn a grade of C or better in each of the 7 major specific courses. [These are the 7 courses required beyond the Common Professional Component.]

Impact on students admitted prior to the publication of the 2004-2006 Undergraduate Bulletin: This applies to all courses taken Fall 2003 or later. For students who were enrolled prior to Fall 2003, D's earned in the major specific courses before Fall 2003 may be counted toward graduation so long as the combined total in the Common Professional Component and in major specific courses is three or fewer.

Grades in the Common Professional Component (Effective Fall 2003)

Students may earn at most one D in the Common Professional Component.

Impact on students admitted prior to the publication of the 2004-2006 Undergraduate Bulletin: This applies to all courses taken Fall 2003 or later. If a student has D’s in the Common Professional Component that were earned prior to Fall 2003, the student may not earn more than one additional D. For students who earned D's prior to Fall 2003, the total number of D’s in the combined Common Professional Component and the major specific courses may not exceed three. This total number of D's may not include any D's in major specific courses taken Fall 2003 or later.

Change in Math Requirements (Effective with students taking Area A math Fall 2003 or later and affecting students graduating Spring 2007 or later)

Students should take MATH 1111-College Algebra in Area A; MATH 2040-Brief Calculus in Area D; and MATH 2400 as part of the Common Professional Component. As a consequence, electives will be reduced from 12 hours to 9 hours.

Impact on students admitted prior to the publication of the 2004-2006 Undergraduate Bulletin: Students who complete Area A math prior to Fall 2003 and are progressing toward graduation as a full-time student will not be impacted by this change. The change will be “phased in” over a four-year period. In Fall 2005, 3000 level Business courses will assume that students have taken MATH 2040; in Fall 2006, 4000 level Business courses will assume that students have taken MATH 2040; and students graduating Spring 2007 or later will be required to show MATH 2040 on their Plan of Study.

Students who transfer to NGCSU with other Math courses may be required to take these courses as electives. Higher-level calculus courses can be substituted for MATH 2040.

Changes Specific to Transfer Students

Communications Requirement (Effective with admissions for Fall 2003)

NGCSU includes ENGL 2238-Business Writing (formerly known as BUSA 2108-Business Communications) in Area F. All students graduating from NGCSU with a B.B.A. degree must show at least three semester hours of communications on the Plan of Study. If a student transfers to NGCSU with an Associates degree in Business from another University System of Georgia school, the student may use a three-hour course in the Associates degree program to meet this requirement or may take ENGL 2238 as an elective.

Computer Applications/Information Systems Requirement (Effective with admissions for Fall 2003)

NGCSU includes CSCI 1100/1150-Introduction to Computers and Information Systems (formerly known as BUSA 2201-Computer Applications) in Area F. All students graduating from NGCSU with a B.B.A. degree must show at least three semester hours of computer applications or computer/management information systems on the Plan of Study. If a student transfers to NGCSU with an Associates degree in Business from another University System of Georgia school, the student may use a three-hour course in the Associates degree program to meet this requirement or may take CSCI 1100/1150 as an elective. Students who transfer a three-hour upper division Information Systems course may use this course as an elective toward graduation and use the course to meet this requirement.

Residency Requirements (Effective with admissions for Fall 2003)

Major specific courses: At least four of the seven major specific courses (12 hours) must be completed at NGCSU.

Combined Common Professional Component and major specific courses:

For students graduating Spring 2007 or later: At least nine of the seventeen courses in the combined common professional component and major specific courses (27 hours) must be completed at NGCSU.

For students graduating prior to Spring 2007: At least eight of the sixteen courses in the combined common professional component and major specific courses (24 hours) must be completed at NGCSU.
