Rebecca Wise
Small town girl finds North Georgia a perfect fit

Rebecca Wise grew up in the very small town of Plains, Ga., and knows former President Jimmy Carter and First Lady Rosalynn Carter as neighbors of her parents, Lonnie and Annette Wise.

Respect seems to be in abundance at North Georgia from the community, professors and students.

Before coming to North Georgia, Wise attended two other colleges. “I felt like Goldilocks, because one was too big and one was too small,” says the NGCSU senior majoring in English with a concentration in writing and publication.

The location of the campus in Dahlonega and the fact that North Georgia is the Military College of Georgia were factors in her final choice for her university education. “My dad, both grandfathers, and one grandmother all served in the military, and I take a lot of pride in that,” she says. “I have learned courage from the students who are in the Corps of Cadets, because I see the determination they have and it inspires me to become a better person.”

After her experiences on other campuses, Wise thinks being at North Georgia has helped her develop special skills and personality traits. “I’ve learned to be more open to people and to always respect others,” she explains. “The students here are far more concerned for the well-being of others and have a much greater respect for each other.”

Regarding the faculty members, Wise says: “Every professor I have ever met at North Georgia has encouraged me in a different way. I know that there are professors on the campus that I could go to no matter if I had a question about an assignment, don’t understand something, or just simply want to chat. The professors here are so welcoming and have absolutely helped me in every way possible, from finding an internship to supporting my extra-curricular activities. Professors genuinely are interested in students and encourage them to get involved.”

Wise, a member of Kappa Delta sorority, has served on the student newspaper staff and does volunteer work for NGCSU Career Services by doing publicity for events.

Her favorite campus location is the library, where she likes to study and encounter other students.

“I really don’t believe that I can go anywhere else in the world and find so much trust and respect,” she says. “Respect seems to be in abundance at North Georgia from the community, professors and students.”
