NGCSU holds parking deck partyFrom
Dahlonega Nugget By Matt Aiken
DAHLONEGA — “I think we are now in the largest meeting room in
Dahlonega,” joked Dr. David Potter while speaking to a large
assemblage in the cavernous parking deck of North Georgia
College & State University.
Chuckles echoed throughout the concrete building as dozens of officials and construction workers gathered for the “topping out” party held to commemorate the completion of the top floor of the four-story deck. Now that the structure is complete, builders can focus on mechanical aspects of the project such as plumbing and electric installation, said Project Superintendent Bryan Rhoden. But the building won't see any four-wheeled traffic until mid- to late 2008 since the construction of the student recreation center on the fourth floor is only about to begin. This two story building will include such features as an indoor track, basketball courts and a rock climbing wall, hence the nickname “Rec Deck.” All projects are being handled by Winter construction group. Friday the workers involved were honored with a barbecue lunch from Dahlonega Dessertery. The team has spent the past year hauling 40,000 cubic yards of dirt from the site and then working to pour nearly the same amount of concrete into the facility. A total of 130-160 construction workers labored on weekends and often well into the night in order to stay on schedule. Ironically, in a time of record drought, the major concern facing the builders throughout the construction process was an excess of water. “The water tables in the area of the project are pretty high,” said Project Manager Carrie Campbell. “So we had some challenges.” After a series of ground studies, several on-site wells were drilled to control the water flow. In the meantime, the lack of rain benefitted builders by allowing them to work through the summer and fall with little to no work stoppages. “We've been able to really be productive with the dry weather,” said Campbell. Upon completion, the downtown parking deck will be open to students during class hours. It will then be available to the public for a fee. An elevator has been installed with pedestrians in mind as it provides direct access to West Main Street. “We put the elevator in primarily to accommodate people downtown,” said Gerald Lord, associate vice president for NGCSU Business & Finance. Public parking fees will go to the Student Government Association, which is funding the $26.4 million needed for the entire development. “We're just thrilled with the project,” surmised Potter. “And we're really looking forward to it making a huge difference, not only for our campus but in the community.”
