Forsyth mom and daughter graduate from college together

Treva Kaye Moeller and Treva Joyce Moeller

DAHLONEGA – A mother and daughter of Cumming, Ga., shared a milestone in their lives on May 8. Treva Joyce Moeller received her bachelor’s degree and her daughter Treva Kaye Moeller received her master’s degree from North Georgia College & State University in Dahlonega. Both women earned degrees in early childhood education.

“My daughter inspired me to go back to school,” Joyce Moeller said.

A mother of three, Joyce Moeller graduated from Gainesville College in 1988 with an associate’s degree in early childhood education.

At North Georgia the mother and daughter didn’t take any classes together but did have some of the same professors.

“We compared grades,” Joyce Moeller admitted. “I think that made us both work a lot harder.”

The hard work resulted in the two graduating with academic honors this month.

Joyce Moeller has accepted a teaching position at Cumming Elementary School. Kaye Moeller is currently a teacher at Chestatee Elementary School.

Joyce Moeller’s son Richard Moeller II graduated from Reinhardt College on May 1, making three of the five-member family college graduates in the same month.

Husband and father Richard Moeller is the minister at New Hope United Methodist Church. He has a master’s of divinity from Emory University. Daughter Carrie Moeller graduated from Lanier Technical College in Cumming last year.

North Georgia graduated more than 540 students at the end of the spring semester. Many NGCSU students take classes in the university’s Forsyth County program, located at North Forsyth High School.

U.S. Rep. Norwood speaks to graduates

U.S. Rep. Charlie Norwood

DAHLONEGA – North Georgia College & State University graduated more than 540 students on May 8 in two ceremonies. U.S. Rep. Charlie Norwood, representing Georgia's 9th district, spoke to the graduates and to 20 students commissioning as second lieutenants in the U.S. Army at an earlier ceremony.

“I want to challenge each of you to make the most of your respective lives and to invest [yourselves] wisely and honorably,” Norwood told the graduating college students. “You have to be the best you can be.”

“The greatest cultural treasure we hand off to you today is freedom. It is also your greatest protection. Use it, love it, protect it, nourish it,” Norwood told them.

Students graduated with associate’s, bachelor’s and master’s degrees. More than 130 degree recipients graduated with honors, achieving a 3.5 grade point average or higher. Eight students were designated as distinguished military graduates.
