Joe Kleid uses ‘campus hopping’ to finish degree sooner By Joshua Preston DAHLONEGA (July 7, 2006) – North Georgia College & State University has two off-campus programs in two adjoining counties – Hall and Forsyth. Cumming native Joe Kleid, 23, has successfully maximized the benefit of both locations to get closer to receiving a marketing degree from the university. He spends a lot of his time this summer at the University Center at Gainesville State College, where he is taking three NGCSU marketing classes.
Prior to this year, Kleid spent most of his classtime less than 20 miles away from Gainesville State at the NGCSU Forsyth County location at North Forsyth High School in Cumming. Kleid took many of his core curriculum classes there including the requisite maths and English before plunging into his major courses. “Every single semester, I would automatically do a search for classes in the Forsyth program,” Kleid said. “Even if it was only a few courses, I would take those courses.” Kleid would drive to the university’s main campus in Dahlonega for his remaining course requirements. The ride to the main campus was pinching his wallet because of gas prices, so when he started his major classes in marketing, he was thankful that Gainesville was an option. “It was a really good transition from Forsyth to the Gainesville campus. A lot of my major classes are in Gainesville and enrolling in them will allow me to finish my degree.” The undergraduate student has been involved in many different activities throughout college. He starred in four theatrical plays at NGCSU and took parts in several smaller productions. He has a steady job at the Comfort Inn in Cumming. His interest in local politics sparked his involvement in the Young Republicans of Forsyth County organization, which hosts county commissioner debates open to the public. The Toastmasters speakers club has helped Kleid improve his public-speaking skills and become even more civically engaged. Staying true to his business pursuits, Kleid just received his real estate license. Real estate development is a family tradition and gives him a post-college career option. May 2007 is the magic date for the senior to finish his degree. A new master of business administration degree is a not-too-distant reality at North Georgia, and it gives Kleid the option of getting a second degree in business. For the focused college student, that’s been his plan all along. |
