Confidentiality
All counseling/therapy sessions are treated with the strictest of confidence. This means that anything mentioned in the confines of the office will not be told to anyone else without the express, written permission of the student. The student, however, is free to share with anyone else whatever they choose from the counseling session. All student records are kept in locked files in the counseling office and do not become part of an academic record, nor are they made available to any other member of the university or one's parents.
Exceptions to Confidentiality
There are three exceptions to confidentiality. First, if it is clear to the counselor that the student may harm him/her self or someone else, then the counselor is required by law to take steps to protect any potential victim. Second, if a child or elder is being abused, and this becomes known in counseling, the counselor is required to act. Third, if the record of any counseling/therapy sessions is requested by a court order, it must be given to the court.
