Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to live on campus? The cost for living in Donovan Hall, Lewis Hall, and Lewis Annex for the 2008-2009 year is $1326.00/semester for double occupancy room and $1799.00/semester for single occupancy room. The cost of living in Owen Hall is $2688/semester for a 12-month lease. Financial Aid may be used toward housing costs. You may contact the Financial Aid office at 706-864-1412.

Can I move into my room early/late? The residence halls open at designated times for each semester. Residents are not allowed to move in early. Each student is expected to move in between 12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. on opening day or risk losing her space in the residence halls. New student move-in day for Fall 2008 will be August 17, 2008.

What items should I bring with me? You should bring items that will make you feel most comfortable in your dorm room. However, remember that you will be sharing this space with another person. Also, there are a few items not allowed in the NGCSU Residence Halls. You may access What To Bring, a list of recommended items to bring, a list of items provided in the residence hall and room, and a list of items prohibited in the NGCSU residence halls.

Can I have a computer in my room? You may have a computer in your room. All rooms are wired for computer access to the campus network at no additional cost to the student. It is the student's responsibility to have the appropriate configurations on his or her computer. You may contact the Department of Information Technology for more information at 706-864-1922. Also, computer labs with network access are available in Donovan Hall and Lewis Hall.

Do the residence halls have cable TV and phone access? Cable TV service and local phone service are available in each residence hall room at no additional cost to the student. It is the responsibility of the roommates to bring a television and phone to access these services.

Can I paint/wallpaper my room? Since there are a number of different people that utilize the residence hall rooms throughout the years, permanent decorative changes are not allowed, including nails in walls.

What happens if I do not like my roommate? The Residence Life Staff puts a lot of effort into assigning compatible roommates and we ask you to make every effort to work out minor issues. However, there are several opportunities during the year for a student to find a new roommate and change rooms.

Do I have to buy a meal plan?

All residents in traditional residence halls are required to purchase a 10, 15, or 21 meal plan. Students are originally assigned an Unlimited Access Plan (21 meals) but may change to a 15 or 10 meal plan before or during drop-add. Additionally there is a Canteen and a Starbucks in the Hoag Student Center.

  • Unlimited meal plan -$1296.00/semester
  • 15 meal plan -$1228.00/semester
  • 10 meal plan -$1158.00/semester

 

Can freshmen have a car on campus ? All students are allowed to have a car on campus as long as it is registered with Public Safety. There is a $25 registration fee per semester. These fees are included in matriculation fees. You may contact Public Safety for more information at 706-864-1500.

Can I live in an apartment off campus? Full-time students who have not earned 60 semester hours must live on campus. Students may live off-campus if they live with and commute daily from the permanent legal residence of parent(s) or grandparent(s) within Banks, Cherokee, Dawson, Fannin, Forsyth, Gilmer, Habersham, Hall, Lumpkin, Pickens, Rabun, Towns, Union or White counties; are married or divorced; are 21 years of age or older; or have completed two years of successful active military service.

A waiver of this policy will be considered in individual cases for unique hardships. Prospective students should submit requests to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, enrolled students to the Office of Student Affairs.

Where can I do laundry and how much does it cost? Coin-operated machines are located in each residence hall. It costs $.075 to wash and $0.75 to dry a load of clothes. An ironing board is provided. However, students should provide their own irons.

How do I get mail? Every resident student is assigned a Post Office Box. Boxes are located in the Student Center. You should receive your box number during INTRO. Mail should be addressed as

Can I stay on campus during the holidays or breaks? The residence halls close between semesters and for Thanksgiving and Spring Break. Students should plan in advance and make arrangements for other housing during these times. Owen Hall apartments are open year-round, including all University holidays and breaks.

Is it possible to get a single or private room? When space is available, a student may request and be assigned a private room with payment of a private room fee. During fall semester, private rooms are only available in Lewis Hall.
