Viewing/Listening to a Podcast with iTunes

This is a quick guide for installing iTunes on your computer and subscribing to selected NGCSU podcast channels. It is recommended that you have the latest version of iTunes to ensure compatibility.

Installing iTunes on Your Computer

iTunes is free and available in the following platforms - Windows and Macintosh. The Windows version of iTunes requires Windows XP or Vista. The Macintosh version requires Mac OS X 10.3.9 or later.

  • Go to the following URL to download iTunes: http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
  • Click on the blue button "Download iTunes Free."
  • On the popup window choose "Save File" and save it to your desktop.
  • The "iTunesSetup.exe" is now located on your desktop.
  • Double-click "iTunesSetup.exe" and follow installation instructions.
Subscribing to a Podcast Channel

Your instructor will provide you with a specific link on their faculty web page or from within WebCT VISTA, which will take you to the University System of Georgia Podcasting Service and to the instructor's particular podcast channel.

  • Click on the link provided to you by your instructor.
  • If you have not done so already, download and install iTunes. (see above)
  • You can subscribe to your instructor's podcast channel in two ways:
    • Click on the "Subscribe" button.
    • OR
    • Launch iTunes.
      • From the "Advanced" menu, select "Subscribe to Podcast."
      • Paste the URL given to you by your instructor into the box and click OK.
  • The channel you "subscribed" to will start downloading episodes.
  • Once it is downloaded, you can view or listen to your episode/podcast.
    • For video podcasts, there are two ways to increase screen size: by pressing the screen button or clicking and dragging the video into the work area (See Image).
  • If you wish to view episode on iPod you will have to first convert video to iPod format by clicking on Advanced/Covert Selection for iPod (See Image).
  • And the last thing, if more episodes are added to certain channel just click on "Update" button on upper right corner of your screen.

What if I get a popup box asking for a username and password?

At some point one of your professors may have restricted access to their podcast channel, requiring you to enter a username and password. So next time you update podcasts for ANY subscription, iTunes looks at all the podcasts channels you've subscribed to before, and if one requires a username and password, the little security window will pop up. If you're updating or subscribing to a different podcast channel, simply close the popup window and you should be able to access the nonrestricted channels.

Note: If you experience problem with playing the files you have just downloaded on iTunes, you may need to clear and download again the given podcast.
