PREVENTING THEFT (Common Sense Rules Always Apply)

» LOCK UP

Lock your doors even when you're home. Lock your car. Lock your bike to an immovable object. Lock your purse in a drawer in your office or place of work. Keep valuables out of sight then it will be out of mind. Remember it only takes a thief 10 seconds or less to take something from your room or vehicle.

Lock your door when you sleep, even in a residence hall.

Don't hide the key to your room. Remember, if you hide it they will find it.

Don't leave your property unattended, if you're leaving for a minute, take your things with you.

Don't leave notes on your door announcing you aren't home or when and where to meet you. This gives a valuable clue to the thief how much time he/she has to steal from you.

Identify your belongings. Engrave your personal code on items that might interest a thief - television sets, stereo equipment, radios, cameras, computers, CD/DVD players and anything else that's portable. Record the serial numbers and keep them in a safe place. (Need an engraver, call 706-864-1500 to arrange for an engraver).

Be a little suspicious of your neighbors until you know them well enough to be friends. Don't take chances, report suspicious behavior or activity immediately to the campus police.

Common Sense Rules always apply, don't lend your keys, student ID, driver's license or credit card to anyone. Don't use your check card to purchase online products, use only a designated credit card for online purchases

PREVENTING SEXUAL ASSAULT(Common Sense Rules Always Apply)

Did you know that most rapes and sexual assaults are committed by acquaintances.

See The Code of Georgia Annotated:

  • 16-6-1 Rape
  • 16-6-2 Sodomy; aggravated sodomy
  • 16-6-5.1 Sexual assault
  • 16-6-22.1 Sexual battery

» BE ASSERTIVE, DIRECT, AND CLEAR

  • Be direct about reaching an understanding with a friend or a date.
  • Don't assume an earlier understanding still holds true.
  • Sex without consent is rape and is a criminal offense.
  • Don't accept a ride from someone you have just met, no matter how nice he seems.
  • Alcohol and drugs impair not only your judgment but also your ability to make that judgment clear to someone else.
  • 79 percent of sexual assaults incidents are alcohol or drug related.

WHEN A SEXUAL ASSAULT OCCURS (Common Sense Rules Always Apply)

If you are sexually assaulted on campus, report it immediately to the Campus Police 706-864-1500. An off-campus assault should be reported to the Lumpkin County Sheriff's Office at 911.

Your Campus Police are here to help you. On campus or off-campus assaults, we will assist you.

Calling the police does not commit you to pressing charges.

If you are sexually assaulted an assault evidence collection exam must be obtained within 72 hours of the assault. So it is important to preserve as much physical evidence as possible, do not bathe, douche, or change clothes. If you have changed clothes, please place them in a paper bag for safekeeping. If you are examined by a sexual assault nurse examiner (Northeast Georgia Medical Center), she will also discuss pregnancy prevention, and the prevention of sexually transmitted infections. She will also provide information about follow-up testing.

If you do not want a sexual assault evidence collection exam, you are encouraged to seek medical attention.
