Professor weighs in on US-China relations

Students gather to protest university cuts

Local students joined those from across the state Monday at the Capitol to rally against budget cuts to the University System of Georgia. What was once $300 million in proposed cuts is now down to $117 million, but many programs remain on the chopping block, including master’s degree programs in nursing at North Georgia College & State University in Dahlonega and the swimming program at Gainesville State College in Oakwood. Dinner honors three local community leaders

Three community leaders were honored Thursday at the Northeast Georgia Council of the Boy Scouts of America annual American Values Dinner. Businessman Mike Cottrell, Chamber of Commerce leader Kit Dunlap and attorney Woody Stewart all received Thursday the Ralph Cleveland Distinguished Citizen Award for each of their contributions to the community. ...Max Burns, the dean of the Mike Cottrell Business School at North Georgia College & State University, called Cottrell a "visionary" and an "innovator." Students rally against cuts

Many lunch-hungry students may have lost their appetite last week when they arrived at the North Georgia College & State University dining hall only to hear word of the $4.2 million in proposed state budget cuts currently facing their alma mater. "Shocked would be great word," said Martin Erbele. The Student Government Association president was posted at the entrance of the cafeteria as he explained the possible cuts and encouraged his fellow students to do something about it. Lecture series offers a global view

A six-week lecture and discussion series is encouraging residents of Hall and Forsyth counties to think globally and speak locally. Great Decisions 2010 is a forum intended to engage people in issues of foreign policy and other international concerns. The long-running national program is being facilitated locally this year by North Georgia College & State University, which is making its faculty members available as sources of expertise on a range of topics. Chancellor: Georgia's higher education at risk

Georgia lawmakers were urged Wednesday to soften the blows to public colleges and universities, which face up to $600 million in cuts as part of the state's budget crisis. Beetle battle continues

University system submits proposed budget cuts

A plan to cut hundreds of millions of dollars from the University System of Georgia's budget might mean cutting Gainesville State College's swimming program and eliminating 20 percent of the courses at North Georgia College & State University, according to a document compiled for lawmakers. And that's just the start of the cuts. Erroll B. Davis Jr., chancellor for the University System of Georgia, provided a detailed list of $300 million in systemwide cuts to lawmakers Monday.
