The Minority Advising Program (MAP)
The Georgia Board of Regents Minority Advising Program (MAP) coordinates programs that enhance the academic welfare of minority students in the University System of Georgia. Its goals include the promotion of academic success, development of human potential, and the creation of an environment that fosters the success and retention of minority students.
To assure the implementation and maintenance of effective Minority Advising Programs at all USG institutions, Board of Regent's system guidelines state that each institution within the University System of Georgia will establish and maintain a Minority Advising Program. The intent of the Minority Advising Program is not to replace, but rather to supplement, regular academic advising and support activities. MAP also addresses the academic and non-academic needs of students by addressing cognitive and non-cognitive dimensions of intellectual, personal, and social self-actualization.

MAP at North Georgia College & State University focuses on students' academic and non-academic needs through individualized and group counseling, reinforcing the advisement process, developing study skills, tutoring, exploring career options and opportunities, identifying financial aid resources, and providing socially and culturally appropriate programming to bring effective role-models in contact with minority students.
Although the MAP target population is self-identified minorities, the program opens its doors to all interested NGCSU students. Meetings are held each Thursday from 12:30-2:00 pm in the MAP Student Center located at 016 Barnes Hall. Students who are interested in MAP should 1) fill out a program enrollment form, 2) come to the Thursday MAP meetings, and 3) actively participate in program activities on a regular basis.
In order to maintain enrollment status and be placed on the MAP participant list, students must be involved with a minimum of three MAP activities or three formal advising sessions with the MAP Coordinator each semester. Students may re-enroll in MAP at any time and will be considered active again, after completing three MAP sponsored activities or three advising sessions with the MAP Coordinator.
MAP sponsors several interesting student activities annually, including but not limited to, trips to increase academic excellence, a Leadership Conference, a State MAP Conference, special speakers, a spectacular Academic Awards Banquet for enrolled MAP students, a Spring “Barbeque Blast” Feast, Holiday Parties, live theater outings, cultural celebrations, and other student-focused activities. MAP students are expected to actively participate in the development of program activities.
