affairs, federal law enforcement, homeland security; or a career in
international business? Do you want to get a jump-start on your college career?
Then the North Georgia Summer Institute is for you!
WHAT IS THE SUMMER INSTITUTE?
| The Summer Institute consists of two modules: a Foreign Language and Culture
Module and the Summer Transition Program for Cadets Module. These modules are
designed to be academically challenging, fun, and thoroughly rewarding. You will
live on campus. Your classmates will be fellow Cadets and other students who
have similar interests. |

|
WHAT COURSES WILL I TAKE?
There are two modules available. They are:
- Module I: Foreign Language and Culture (Arabic, Chinese,
French, Russian, or Spanish)
- Module II: Summer Transition Program for Cadets
Description of each module follows:
Module I: Foreign Language and Culture.
The Summer Language Institutes (SLIs) at North Georgia College & State University immerse students in specially designed academic and experiential programs of language study to provide a solid foundation for further language learning in addition to setting students on a career path in state or federal public service, international business, or the science professions. The SLIs develop leaders who can anticipate, adapt to, and manage the highly fluid and ever-changing circumstances of the dynamic international environment.
The Summer Language Institutes (SLIs) are carefully tailored language programs of study in Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish. Other languages may be added if sufficient demand can be demonstrated, so if you are interested in another language, just ask. All institutes are academically challenging, intensely fun, and thoroughly rewarding. Because of their nature, the SLIs are residential programs, and as such, all participating students must live on campus for the duration of the program.
The SLIs are accelerated and intensive language programs through an immersion-style approach. Activities are engaging, challenging, and fun within the context of learning the language by substantial interaction between students and native-speaking faculty and assistants. In addition to classroom instruction, participants will enjoy co-curricular activities in language. For North Georgia students, completing one of these institutes will satisfy the Area B language requirement in the Core Curriculum.
For 2010, North Georgia will be offering SLIs in elementary Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), and Russian. French and Spanish will also be offered at the elementary or intermediate level. Class size is limited to 16.
Courses:
Arabic 1001 and 1002
Chinese 1001 and 1002
Russian 1001 and 1002
French 1001 and 1002 or 2001 and 2002
Spanish 1001 and 1002 or 2001 and 2002
All language institutes are 8 credit hours: 3 hours per course plus 2 hours of language lab.

The high level of expectation kept all of us going and
reaching for a common goal. The teachers were amazing. I have never seen a group
of teachers spend so much time with students."
"I really like the use of the language lab as well as the
trips to Chinatown, which was the closest to immersion we can find in America.
The constant study of Chinese also accentuated the learning process because we
ate, slept, and did everything with Chinese on the mind."
"The class size was perfect and we all were comfortable
working with each other. The teacher knew our limits and where to slow
down."
"The fact that we were never away from the language really
helped. The activities on the weekends also helped lighten the mood. Listening
to the music and other incorporation of Chinese culture helped and was
interesting."
"The intensity worked. Speaking all day everyday really
helped us to learn quickly."
"Not only have I found a new passion in a language but the
program taught me SO much more than that. It was a fantastic introduction into
the college world. I learned how to study and discipline myself like never
before."
