Colonel Billy E. Wells, Jr.

Colonel Billy E. Wells, Jr., was born in Vardaman, Mississippi, on October 8, 1952. He graduated from Mississippi State University in 1975 and was commissioned in the Regular Army as a Second Lieutenant of Infantry.

Colonel Wells began his service with the 82d Airborne Division where he served as a rifle platoon leader, mortar platoon leader, company executive officer, scout platoon leader in the 2d Battalion, 505th Infantry and as the 3d Brigade S-3 Air.

Following attendance at the Field Artillery Advanced Course, he attended Louisiana State University and obtained a Masters Degree in Education. He was then assigned to Grafenwoer, Germany, as the training officer for 7th Army Training Command. Subsequently assigned to 1st Armored Division, he served as battalion S-3 Air and commander of B Company, 1st Battalion, 54th Infantry (Mechanized).

Colonel Wells was selected in 1984 to serve in the new 75th Ranger Regiment as the original commander of the Regimental Reconnaissance Detachment. After promotion to Major, he was assigned to the Infantry School serving as a doctrine writer and liaison officer to the Joint Readiness Training Center.

Following attendance at Command and General Staff College in 1989, Colonel Wells was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) as the S-3 of 3d Battalion, 327th Infantry. Deploying for Desert Shield and Desert Storm, he participated in two major air assault operations into FOB COBRA and FOB VIPER. Upon return from overseas, he became the battalion executive officer and, subsequently, the 1st Brigade executive officer.

In 1993 he reported to the 24th Infantry Division (Mech) and assumed command of the 3d Battalion, 15th Infantry. During this time, the battalion deployed units to both Somalia and Haiti in addition to participation in multiple NTC rotations.

Colonel Wells reported for duty as G-3, 25th Infantry Division in 1997, departing to assume command of the 4th Brigade, 87th Division (Training Support) at Fort Stewart, Georgia. Colonel Wells comes to North Georgia College & State University from his most recent assignment as the Chief of Staff, First United States Army.

Colonel Wells’ awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (6), Army Commendation Medal (3), and Army Achievement Medal (1). He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, Southwest Asia Service Medal with two battle stars and the Saudi Arabian and Kuwait Liberation Medals for service in Desert Shield/Desert Storm and has earned the Air Assault Badge, Expert Infantry Badge and Ranger Tab. He is also a Master Parachutist and Military Freefall Parachutist.

Colonel Wells is married to the former Kathy Young of Franklin, Kentucky. They have six children. Jennifer Link resides in Nashville, Tennessee. Anne Holland “Holly” Maher, and her husband, CPT Jay Maher, are stationed at Fort Rucker where he is attending the Aviation Officer Advanced Course. Both Jay and Holly are NGCSU graduates. 2LT Charles Wells and his wife, Valerie Harvard Wells, also NGCSU graduates, are currently stationed at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Kathryn Wells, currently a student at NGCSU, is scheduled to graduate in 2003. Twins, Sarah and Susan, age 15, reside at home.
