Q: Where can I get an application and how do I apply?
A: Click here
for the application and application guidelines. After you download the application, print it out, fill in the required information and mail it to:
North Georgia College & State University
Cadet Recruitment Center
ATTN: GMS
Dahlonega, GA. 30957
Once you have mailed in the application and have been accepted to the university, the scholarship coordinator will contact you to schedule an interview. During this time, you should also be in contact with a Georgia Army National Guard recruiter in order to prepare for your enlistment if you become a Georgia Military Scholarship recipient. At any point that you have questions regarding the application process, please do not hesitate to call the Cadet Recruitment Center at 1-888-413-9366.
Q: What are the minimum qualifications needed to be considered
for the scholarship?
A: 3.0 cumulative High School GPA on a 4.0 scale, 480 critical reading and 440 math
score on the SAT, college prep or dual seal high school diploma,
and demonstrated leadership potential. Additionally, one must
be physically qualified to join the Georgia Army National
Guard.
Q: If I am a GMS recipient, what do I have to pay?
A: GMS recipients are required to pay room deposit ($250), and uniform deposit ($1,305).
The room deposit will not be refunded
until you permanently withdrawal from the institution for
graduation. At that point, the check will be mailed to your
home of record. The uniform deposit is refunded within one
week of successful completion of FROG Week and can be picked
up at the business office.
Q. How do I apply for the uniform deposit reimbursement?
A: The uniform deposit reimbursement is automatic. The funds will
not be available until the day before classes start because
GMS recipients are not officially eligible for GMS benefits
until FROG Week has been successfully completed.
Q: Will I receive a stipend for books?
A: Yes. As a GMS recipient you will receive $375 each semester
for books. The week before the first day of classes, you will
pick a check up from the business office and deposit it into
your personal checking account. You will use this money to
pay for your books.
Q: How are my bills for tuition and room and board paid?
A: You will not receive a bill for tuition, or room and board.
Your account with the university will automatically be credited
the correct amount to cover these costs. The meal plan provided
to you through the scholarship is for 21 meals a week.
Q: Paperwork for GMS says that no other state funds can be
used in conjunction with GMS. Does this mean that I cannot
use the Hope Scholarship for the Summer Transition Program
and GMS for the fall?
A: GMS recipients can use the Hope Scholarship to pay for
summer classes or other programs such as the Summer Transition
Program. Utilization of Hope benefits does not invalidate
GMS for the fall semester.
Q. How long is my obligation to the National Guard?
A. After graduating and commissioning, you are obligated
to serve in the Georgia Army National Guard for at least four
years, or for as many years that you received benefits from
the scholarship. Additionally, you will be required to actively
participate in the Georgia Army National Guard as an enlisted
soldier while you are a student at NGCSU.
Q: When do I have to join the National Guard?
A: Contact your Guard recruiter immediately after notification
that you were awarded the scholarship. You must inprocess
through the Military Enlisted Processing Station prior to
1 August to receive scholarship benefits.
Q: What can I do in the Georgia Army National Guard?
A: There are more than 200 jobs available for soldiers enlisting
in the Georgia Army National Guard. These jobs range from
infantry to tankers to medics to supply clerks, and everything
in between. Contact your area National Guard recruiter to
find out which job would be the best for you.
Q: If I am an GMS winner, when do I attend basic training/AIT?
A: It is strongly encouraged that a GMS recipient attends
North Georgia College & State University in the fall following
high school graduation, and then attend basic training/AIT
in the spring in lieu of Spring Semester classes.
Q: Can I be deployed while attending school as a GMS recipient?
A: No. Effective 15 August 2005, under directive from Major
General Poythress, the Adjutant General of the State of Georgia,
Georgia Military Scholarship recipients are non-deployable
as long as they remain enrolled and in good standing with
NGCSU and the Georgia Army National Guard.
Q: What is the college GPA required in order to keep GMS?
A: 2.5
