Why NGCSU?

Cadet Life

"I wouldn't take all the gold dug out of the hills of Dahlonega for the experiences & the quality of education I have seen my son receive during the past 3 years." -Faith Wheeler, North Georgia Cadets Parents Association President

Being a cadet at North Georgia is more than simply being a college student. As a cadet, you are receiving world-class leadership development and education from the first day you arrive until the day you graduate. You will train to become an effective leader in either the military, government, or civilian sector.

Freshman Year- Your leadership training will revolve around personal development and peer leadership.

Pictured to the left is Cadet Jason Isgrigg who was an active duty Army soldier before coming to NGCSU on a Green-to-Gold scholarship. While on active duty as an infantryman, Jason attained the rank of Staff Sergeant, and became Airborne and Ranger qualified. He is seen here shaking hands with President Bush during recent deployment to Iraq.

Sophmore Year- Your leadership education focuses on the leading small teams. You will be a team leader or squad leader, and completely responsible for the development of up to 10 cadets under your leadership.

Junior Year- Middle-management level leadership education is conducted during your junior year, when you become a cadet platoon sergeant, or company first sergeant, or sergeant major. You will be responsible for conducting training and teaching freshmen and sophomores basic military skills and leadership.

Pictured to the right is the 2006 Cadet Brigade Commander, c/Colonel Richard Lee, with the Honorable Francis J. Harvey, Secretary of the Army. Secretary Harvey visited North Georgia in the spring of 2006 for the National Leadership Conference. During his speech to the Corps of Cadets, Secretary Harvey said, "North Georgia has historically been a developer of leaders with its cadets, many of which go on to join the Army, so the university is an important source of commissioning officers.” North Georgia's reputation of leadership development is truly known at all levels in the United States Army!

Senior Year- Seniors are the upper-level leaders in the Corps of Cadets. Seniors command platoons (30 cadets), companies (75 cadets), battalions (250 cadets), or the brigade (600+ cadets)! As a senior you plan all the activities for the Corps of Cadets and ensure that North Georgia continues to offer the finest ROTC training in the nation.

As a cadet you are part of a great military tradition at one of our nation's 6 Senior Military Colleges, The Military College of Georgia. 39 Army generals have graduated from our world-renowned Corps of Cadets. We produce outstanding officers for the Army and leaders for government and businesses.

North Georgia is in a stunning, beautiful location. We're in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains adjacent to the Chattahoochee National Forest. North Georgia's hometown, Dahlonega, is a small, quaint and historic mountain town that is visited by 350,000 tourists each year, and is the site of the first major gold rush in the United States.

"As we continue to carve out our special niche in Georgia as a Senior Military College, it is the people, the relationships, and the campus atmosphere that will continue to set North Georgia College & State University apart from other institutions." - Laura D. Whitaker-Lea, Dean of Students

Cadets are encouraged to become well-rounded individuals. In fact, North Georgia is listed in Templeton's Guide as an institution that promotes character development. It is our philosophy that well-rounded cadets make the best leaders. For this reason cadets are encouraged to become involved in campus activities such as intramural sports, clubs, student government, fraternities and sororities, or any of the other number of extra-curricular activities offered on campus.

For your entire college career you will develop and enhance skills that will make you a very marketable college graduate! These skills include advanced problem-solving and decision-making, written and verbal communication, project management, time management, and other leadership skills. Additionally, the Leadership Minor offered to cadets will equip you with character-building and leadership traits that further enhance your marketability. When you graduate from North Georgia College & State University, you will be different from any other college graduate! Unlike most college graduates, you can include three years of practical leadership experience on your resume!
