Summer Transition Program (STP)
23 June - 31 July 2009
WHAT IS STP?
STP
is a TRANSITION program designed to help incoming freshmen cadets
adjust from civilian life to military life! You
attend summer school in civilian status before Cadet Basic
Training (FROG Week) begins in August. You will live on campus in a military dormitory
during the second summer “short” academic session.
You will earn 6 hours of academic credit towards your degree,
and you will have counselors (senior members of the Corps of Cadets) who assist you with academics,
physical training, military skills, and time management. STP
provides the opportunity for you to acclimate
to the rigor of the classroom and the regimentation of the
Corps. You will take two academic courses required for
graduation.
WHAT COURSES WILL I TAKE?
You will take one of the following set of courses. This is subject to change until December 2008. Either:
- History and Wellness (3 semester hours each), or
- Chinese (6 semester hours), or
- Arabic (6 semester hours).
WHY SHOULD I ATTEND STP?
You have to cope with three new and challenging situations
when you arrive at North Georgia. First, you must adjust to the
rigors of the college classroom; second, you must learn military
skills, customs and courtesies and transition from civilian life to military
life; and third, you must become physically
fit. STP focuses on academic preparation, military knowledge,
and physical fitness. This gives you the best chance
to succeed once the full military program begins in the fall
semester. STP is not a remedial program!
It is a chance to get ahead in the Corps of Cadets. Last year’s
STP students adapted well and frequently outperformed their
peers throughout the academic year.
WHO CAN ATTEND STP?
Forty new freshman cadets
who desire to get an academic head start on college! If you desire to attend STP, you must be accepted to the university
and meet the university’s regular admission standards.
You must agree to participate in cadet basic training
(FROG Week) in August 2009 and join the Corps of Cadets for
the entire fall semester.
WHEN IS STP?
You will register for, and attend INTRO II (click here for info). INTRO II begins on 21 June. Report time is between 11:00 A.M. and 12:30 P.M. at Donovan Hall. INTRO goes through noon on 23 June. STP begins immediately after. STP Graduation
will be the last day of final exams for summer session which will be 31 July at 1300 (1:00 P.M.).
WHERE IS IT HELD?
STP will be held on the campus of North Georgia, in Dahlonega, Georgia. STP students will
be housed in campus housing (Sanford Hall). Some
training will take place at the Pine Valley Recreation Area,
and in the Chattahoochee National Forest.

Academic Focus:
Most students enjoy our summer terms and particularly appreciate the fact that they can earn college credit in a brief amount of time. At the same time, most students find summer school challenging in that the brevity of the term requires that they maintain a much higher level of focus in order to keep up in their classes.
Given their experiences, it's important that you come prepared to focus on your studies. You'll be given plenty of time to study outside the classroom, and help will be available to assist you with your academics if needed. Ultimately; however, your success will depend on your motivation and attention to your studies.
In the past, a few summer term students found themselves in academic difficulty because they didn't maintain their focus on academics. When that happens, there can be negative consequences. Summer term counts like any other term in college. You need to do as well as you can and get the best grades that you can, or you may lose scholarship benefits and/or risk academic probation in later semesters.
