Construction at NGCSU

As part of our vision to make NGCSU a powerful learning environment, numerous construction projects are currently scheduled. When complete, these projects will include a beautiful new parking deck with a student recreational facility, a new technology library center, and remodeling the current Education building.

Visit the links in the menu below to learn more about these ongoing projects and stay informed about traffic re-routes, delivery and access disruptions, and other inconveniences due to the construction changes.

Current Construction News

April 3, 2008

Parking Deck/Recreation Center:

The Parking Deck is nearing completion (as of 04/03/08). All the concrete is poured and the contractor is completing the fire suppression system, the electrical, the security gates and the cameras. They are nearing completion of the outside brick work, but the landscaping and outside paving will not be completed until just before opening. We expect the deck will be open for parking in late July.

The Recreation Center is progressing well. The steel frame work is about 2/3 finished and the roof support structure should be installed during the month of April. It is on track to be opened on September 3, 2008.

The Plaza area (between the Student Center and Stewart Library) has been completed and landscaped and turned over to the University for student use. It is a great addition to campus.

This is going to be a terrific facility for NGCSU and one we can all be proud of.

Library/Technology Center:

Things are definitely taking shape.  The interior structure is completed and now the work begins on the installation of the main utilities.  The “rough-in” of the electrical, HVAC and plumbing is complete along with the installation of the skywalk and roof top. Sheet rock is being hung on the interior as the exterior glass and brick is going up.  Estimated completion date is set for 7/22/08.

Education Renovation:

All major renovations of the interior of the Education Building are now complete. The sheet rock is going up and painting has begun.  The target completion for this project is 07/02/08.

Campus Parking:
Due to the shortage in parking, the infield of the track has been paved, and will accommodate 160 cars. This area is designated as a "GREEN" parking area but commuters with the “BLACK” parking sticker may park in this area until the end of the spring semester. In addition, there is off site parking at Yahoola Creek which offers a shuttle service between Yahoola Creek and NGCSU.  This service runs non-stop from 8 A.M. – 5:00 P.M. and will operate until the end of Spring Semester.

September 4, 2007:

TRAFFIC PATTERN CHANGE

Contractors will begin the removal of the building at the corner of College Circle and Church Street (also known as Ruby’s or Precision Hair Kutters) this coming Monday, September 10, 2007. The removal should take no more than 5 days. This will require a detour at the end of College Circle onto the temporary gravel construction drive to West Main. Please be extra alert in that area during this phase of the construction.

August 22, 2007:

Welcome back, everyone! It has been a busy summer for the construction projects at NGCSU. Be sure to check out the links to live cameras for the major projects, to see up to the minute progress! Here's a brief update on the various projects:

Rec Center / Parking Deck:
Grading has been completed, and the back retaining wall is complete. Work is currently under way to drill and pour all the concrete piles that will support the structure. This work should be completed within a month. All the structural steel is ordered, and will start to go up shortly after the piles are in place. Highway 60 is being reworked to add a turn lane into the parking deck. This work is expected to be completed by mid October.

Overall, the project is moving forward at a good pace. The parking structure is expected to be completed in August, 2008, and the Rec Center should come on line in September 2008.

Library/ Technology Center:
Walls are coming up! All the grading and foundation work for the new Library and Technology center were completed this summer. Concrete walls are coming up now. We will see structural steel start to be installed in the next few weeks, and the site will start to look like a building.

This project is also moving forward rapidly. We expect to be able to start moving in during June, 2008, with the goal of being fully operational by the beginning of Fall, 2008.

Education Building Renovations:
Major renovations of the interior of the Education Building are under way. Design work has been completed and bids are being solicited for the work. The renovations are scheduled to be completed in May, 2008.

Campus Parking:
Over 300 parking spaces have been taken off line due to construction projects. In order to compensate for this loss, the infield of the track has been paved, and will accommodate 160 cars. This area is designated as a "GREEN" parking zone. We have an off site parking area at the intersection of Morrison Moore Parkway and Mechanicsville Road. Shuttles operate throughout the school day between the lot and the Dining Hall. Commuters are welcome to use this facility to avoid campus congestion.
