IRINA WATKINS WINS 2004 REGION XIII CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIP
Men's Team finishes third in Region XIII and second in SSAC
Clinton, Miss. - Junior's Irina Watkins (Varkaus, Finland) and Kelly Parr ( Maysville, Ga.) led the Saints cross country teams this weekend at the 2004 NAIA Region XIII Cross Country Championship, and advanced to the NAIA National Championships in Louisville, Ky.
Watkins posted her best time of the season, 18:10.84 in the five kilometer event, and won the women's race by over a minute. With the win, she picked up 2004 Region XIII Runner of the Year honors as well as 2004 Southern States Athletic Conference Runner of the Year . Watkins was also named to the 2004 All-Region and All-Conference teams.
Parr finished first for the North Georgia men and 11th overall in the eight kilometer race. He posted a time of 27:48.69, his best time of the season. With the performance, Parr earned an at-large bid to the NAIA National Championships.
Both the women's and men's cross country teams recorded some of the best times of the year. Junior Anna Roller (Commerce, Ga.) finished in 28th place in a time of 21:25. Freshman Tara Alexander (Grayson, Ga.) finished third overall on the team with a time of 22:29.02 and knocked over a minute off of her best time of the season. Sophomore Maricela Jacobo (Dalton, Ga.) also shaved 30 seconds off of her personal best and finished in 56th place with a time of 22:52.01. |

On the men's side, freshman Alan Schmitz (Warner Robins, Ga.) finished behind Parr with his best time of the season, 29:07.19. Sophomore Joseph Register (Freeport, Fla.) also ran a strong race and finished in 23rd place with a time of 29:13.14, which marked his best race of the season.
The North Georgia women's team finished in seventh place out of 13 schools in the region and in fourth place overall in the SSAC. The men's team once again narrowly missed a second place finish by less than five points again as they finished in third place with 93 points in the region, four points behind runner-up Lee University. The Saints though tied Lee University in the conference with 65 points and won the tie-breaker with sophomore Bryan Harris' (Cleveland, Ga.) sixth place finish on the team.
Berry College won both the men's and women's races and won for the automatic bid to the national meet.
Watkins and Parr will now prepare for the 2004 NAIA National Cross Country Championship in Louisville, Ky. on November 20. The women's race begins at 10:30 am with the men's race to follow at 11:30 am. |
