CAUGHELL LEADS LADY SAINTS TO VICTORY
Caughell heads home winning goal with just 34 seconds remaining
Dahlonega, GA - Katie Caughell scored with just 34 seconds remaining on the clock to give the North Georgia College & State University a 3-2 victory over UNC Pembroke.
Caughell headed home a corner kick off the foot of Kelsey Webb in the 89th minute to give the Lady Saints their second conference victory of the season.
UNC Pembroke struck first when Kim Oijerstedt scored her seventh goal of the season off of a rebound. Oijerstedt followed up a shot by Nisa Akins, that was deflected by Lady Saints goalkeeper Leigha Terry. Terry had no chance to react to the follow, which gave UNC Pembroke a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute.
The goal came moments after the Lady Saints had two shots go off the crossbar, the first by Kelly Orear in the eighth minute and Lauren Cappy narrowly missing a goal in the 12th minute.
The Lady Saints equalized the contest when Katie Turner finished off a corner kick in the 38th minute. Turner cleaned up the kick from about 30 yards out with her left foot, putting it past Braves' goalkeeper Hillary Helms. Katie Baribault recorded the assist.
UNC Pembroke (4-4-1, 0-2-1 PBC) struck back with just 3:17 left on the clock in the first half when PBC-leading scorer Melanie Cobb scored her ninth goal of the season. Cobb finished a cross from Katie Lail with one touch to put the Braves up 2-1.
Pembroke had a breakaway in the second half to put the game out of reach, but Terry stifled Cobb two times inside the six.
Cappy equalized the game with just 13 minutes remaining, when she beat Helms to the far post with a toe ball. Cappy cut the ball back on her defender and then put the ball away in the 77th minute.
North Georgia (4-4-1, 2-2 PBC) returns to action Tuesday, traveling to Converse College.
