LADY SAINTS FORGE TIE IN SEASON OPENER
Gaffney, SC – North Georgia College & State University used an early goal by Lauren Cappy and a stingy defense, to forge a 1-1 tie with Limestone College on the road Thursday afternoon.
Cappy scored the game’s first goal on a corner kick in the 34th minute. She took a bouncing ball in the box and beat Limestone keeper Liz Eichorn to the lower right corner.
The Lady Saints were stingy on defense in the first half, allowing only six shots on goal. The most dangerous play came with less five minutes to go when Limestone took a shot from point blank range, but North Georgia goalkeeper Mary Canon Williams was able to save the shot and preserve the 1-0 lead at the half.
The Lady Saints held tough until the 70th minute when Bekki Hagarman headed a corner kick past Lady Saints’ keeper Leigha Terry to tie the game at 1-1.
The game stayed that way for the next 20 minutes of regulation and the final 20 minutes of overtime.
Both teams had their chances during regulation and overtime, with the Lady Saints missing on an opportunity late in the first half when Cappy’s shot was saved by Eichron.
Limestone had a chance to win the game in the waning seconds, but Alexis Brothers’ shot went wide as the buzzer sounded to finish the tie game.
Canon Williams and Terry combined to stop seven Limestone shots on goal.
“I felt like this game gave us the best look at what we are capable of this upcoming season,” North Georgia coach Chris Adams said. “There were times in the game where we played consistently, but there were times where we had breakdowns. We handled the breakdowns and adversity well today.”
