LADY SAINTS FALL ON THE ROAD
Jessica Williams scores lone goal for North Georgia
SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Armstrong Atlantic State women’s soccer squad won its
program-best sixth in a row, besting North Georgia, 4-1, in a Peach Belt
Conference match at Cingular Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Pirates (6-1, 2-0 PBC) outshot the Lady Saints, 20-2, in the first
half but had just one goal to show for it as Jennifer Brian placed a shot
from 35 yards out in the top right corner in the 33rd minute for AASU’s
1-0 lead at intermission.
Freshman Kristin Burton gave the Pirates a two-goal advantage with her
sixth goal of the season, converting off of a pass from Lyndsi Stricklen
in the 56th minute. North Georgia (2-4-1, 0-2 PBC) answered back, however,
as Jessica Williams headed in a shot off of Sarah Hales’ free kick in the
59th minute to cut the lead to 2-1.
Burton put the Pirates back up by two with her second goal of the game in
the 63rd minute. The Ocala, Fla., native has four goals in her first two
home games as a Pirate. Emily Latner capped the scoring with a header off
of a corner from Lyndsi Stricklen in the 87th minute.
North Georgia keeper Mary Canon-Williams recorded nine saves on the
afternoon, while Samantha Held continued her scoreless streak by holding
the Lady Saints without a goal in the first half. Tarra Kohler entered in the
second half and made one save.
AASU outshot the Lady Saints, 30-6, for the contest and took seven corners
compared to the Saints’ four.
"We played well," Lady Saints coach Chris Adams said. "The score is by no means indicitive of how we played. We gave up some late goals, but we played well against a great team."
The Pirates next host Columbus State on Wednesday, September 20, for a key
Peach Belt battle at 4:00 p.m. North Georgia next plays at Georgia
Southwestern on Tuesday, September 19, at 4:00 p.m.
