LADY SAINTS FALL 2-1 TO LENOIR-RHYNE IN WOMEN'S SOCCER SEASON OPENER
Junior Devon Wilt collects a goal and an assist in the win
Asheville, N.C. - The Lenoir-Rhyne College Women's Soccer Team (1-0) defeated North Georgia College & State University, 2-1, in its 2005 season opener Friday at Memorial Stadium in Asheville, N.C., in the first match of the Mars Hill Invitational.
This match also marked the first competition as a member of the NCAA for North Georgia.
The Bears opened the scoring at the 29:51 mark when freshman forward Vanessa Szewczuk (Orlando, Fla./University HS) scored in front of the net off a double-assist cross from sophomore midfielder Caroline Herzl (Littleton, Colo./Heritage HS) and junior midfielder Devon Wilt (St. Petersburg, Fla./Lakewood HS).
Wilt, who finished with a goal and an assist in the match, made it 2-0 with a turn and a blast into the net 20 yards out off corner kick in the 63rd minute.
North Georgia cut the lead to 2-1 thanks to an unassisted breakaway goal from Lauren Cappy (Suwannee, Ga.) at 81:51 but the Bears were able to hold on from there. Sophomore goalkeeper Nicole Ley (Cupertino, Calif./Monta Vista HS) had nine saves and picked up the win for the Bears.
