SPARTANS RECORD 4-0 SHUTOUT OVER SAINTS
Spartanburg, S.C. - USC Upstate scored two goals in the first half and
cruised to a 4-0 victory over North Georgia Saturday afternoon at County
University Soccer Stadium.
With the win, USC Upstate improves to 2-2-2 overall and 1-0-0 in the
Peach Belt Conference. Playing in its first Peach Belt match ever, North
Georgia drops to 0-3-0 overall and 0-1-0 in the league. USC Upstate
travels to Belmont Abbey for a 4:00 p.m. start Wednesday. North Georgia
travels to Clayton State next Saturday for a 7:30 p.m. start.
USC Upstate opened the scoring when Samantha McClay dropped a pass to
Sarah Updegrave 30 yards out in the middle of the field. Updegrave took
two touches and fired a shot off the post from 25 yards. The shot
bounced off the post and off of North Georgia goalkeeper Mary
Canon-Williams into the back of the net to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead
in the 34th minute.
Brittany Gourdine added to the USC Upstate lead in the 29th minute when
she was taken down in the box and converted the penalty kick.
USC Upstate, in control of the match, made it a 3-0 match in the 59th
minute when Katrina Meyer pressed up on the attack from her defender
position and played a perfect through ball to a streaking Gourdine.
Gourdine placed a shot by North Georgia's keeper for the goal.
The Spartans finished the scoring when Gourdine took the ball down the
left sideline and played a cross to an open McClay who fired a shot into
the back of the net in the 85th minute.
USC Upstate starting goalkeeper Diana Wabnitz faced 11 North Georgia
shots, making five saves, before being taken out in the 83rd minute.
Melissa Amos came on to preserve the shutout with two saves.
