LADY SAINTS AND LADY INDIANS PLAY TO 2-2 TIE
Dahlonega, Ga. - The Newberry women's soccer team overcame an early 0-1 deficit, but gave up a late regulation goal to draw with North Georgia College & State University, 2-2, after two overtime periods this afternoon at the NGCSU Soccer Complex.
Newberry's Megan Dietel (St. Charles, Mo.) had a hand in both of Newberry's goals. The Lady Indians move to 7-5-2 overall and remain 3-3 in the South Atlantic Conference, while the Lady Saints move to 2-11-1 overall.
Newberry dominated possession early in the game, but couldn't get many shots. The Lady Saints added constant pressure to frustrate the Lady Indians, en route to the first goal of the game. The North Georgia goal came after Erin Alexander (White, Ga.) made a run down the right sideline, feeding to Elizabeth Franklin (Lilburn, Ga.) who slipped by the Newberry defense to score in the 23rd minute. The Lady Indians rallied for the equalizer when Inga Woiwode (El Paso, Texas) served a free kick in to Dietel, who jumped up and kicked in her first collegiate goal in the 36th minute.
Although they were out shot by the Lady Saints 5-4 in the first half, Newberry responded in the second by putting up 12 shots to North Georgia's three. The Lady Indians controlled most of the second half by putting more pressure on the North Georgia defenders, which resulted in the barrage of shots. Newberry netted the go-ahead goal in the 64th minute after Elyse Clark (Charleston, S.C.) controlled a throw-in from Woiwode, then touched to Dietel in the North Georgia box. Dietel then fed back to Clark for the score.
Despite Newberry's balanced attack in the second half, the Lady Saints wouldn't go quietly, as they made some noise of their own late in regulation. After two near misses, North Georgia locked the score at two with just over two minutes left when Sarah Hales (Cumming, Ga.) sent a direct kick into the box and off the head of Brittany Bruner (Snellville, Ga.), sending the game into overtime.
Both teams had limited chances in the extra periods, keeping the score even at two apiece. The Lady Saints threatened late in the second overtime, but Newberry keeper Danielle Beckerle (St. Louis, Mo.) made two spectacular saves to preserve the tie. She finished the game with three saves, while North Georgia goalie Kelly Conarro (Atlanta, Ga.) recorded nine.
Up next for the Lady Indians is a home match-up with Nova Southeastern University on October 27th. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. The Lady Saints are scheduled to face Thomas University at home on October 28th at 5 p.m.
