SPARTANS TAKE DOWN LADY SAINTS 6-0

Dahlonega, Ga. - USC Upstate (3-1-0) broke out to a 4-0 lead in the first half and its defense did the rest as they shut out North Georgia (2-2-1) 6-0 in women's soccer action Saturday afternoon.

Senior forward Jamie Newman (Lusby, Md.) scored the her first goal of the match for USC Upstate in the fifth minute to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead. Senior forward Lemeh Horace (High Point, N.C.) scored two goals back-to-back in the 15th and 18th minute to give the Spartans a 3-0 advantage. The final goal of the first half was scored by senior midfielder Cayce Wampole (Greer, S.C.) off of a Horace assist.

In the second half, sophomore defender Veronica Lewis (Columbus, Ohio) netted a break away goal in the first minute of the half. Newman added her second goal of the game off of an assist from senior defender Brandi Murphy (Deer Park, Tx.).

The USC Upstate defense did not allow the Saints to have a shot or corner kick in the entire first half. Junior goal keeper Diana Wabnitz (Largo, Fla.) made two saves in the shutout for the Spartans. Freshman Tracey Hall (Cleveland, Ga.) and Mary Cannon-Williams (Hot Springs Ark.) split time in goal for North Georgia. Hall and had three saves and allowed four goals while Cannon-Williams made five saves and allowed two goals.

The Spartans will be on the road again on Saturday as they head to Aiken, S.C. to take on USC-Aiken at 1:00 pm. The Saints play again this afternoon on the road against conference opponent Southern Wesleyan University at 5:00 pm.
