LADY SAINTS EKE OUT 1-0 FIRST ROUND WIN IN SSAC TOURNAMENT
Dahlonega, Ga. - A penalty kick by sophomore defender Sarah Hales (Cumming, Ga.) in the 73rd minute lifted North Georgia over Southern Wesleyan University 1-0 in the first round of the 2004 Southern States Athletic Conference women's soccer tournament.
Both the Lady Saints (12-6-2, 1-0-0) and the Lady Warriors (7-8-2, 0-1-0) pressed hard throughout the match to break through the defense, but neither team was able to in the first half. North Georgia out-shot SWU 9-3 in the first half, but the Lady Warriors sophomore goalkeeper Rebecca Rickard (Denton, NC) made five saves and the defense held strong to keep SWU in the match.
In the second half, the Lady Saints continued to press Rickard as they took 14 shots in the second period. Rickard answered the call as she made seven saves in the second half. An opportunity finally opened for North Georgia as the Lady Warriors committed a hand ball foul inside the 16-yard box. Hales used the penalty kick to sneak the ball by Rickard and score the game-winning goal for the Lady Saints. |
