LADY SAINTS TAKE BITE OUT OF WOLVES
Four players in double figures for the Lady Saints
Montevallo, AL – The North Georgia College & State University Lady Saints broke open a close game in the first half, and ran to a 68-44 victory over the State University of West Georgia here Friday afternoon.
With the game tied at 8-8 midway through the first half, the Lady Saints went on a 16-0 run over the next six minutes to extend the lead to 24-8. Junior forward Kourtney Singleton connected on a three-pointer to break the tie at the 10:31 mark, and give the Lady Saints the lead for good. Rachael Jolley then hit two consecutive lay-ups to extend the lead to 15-8 with less then nine minutes to go in the half.
Singleton struck again on the next trip down the floor for North Georgia (2-2), hitting another three-pointer to extend the lead to ten, at 18-8 with 7:54 remaining in the opening half. Syretha Marble hit a layup 40 seconds later to push the lead to 20-8, before Megan Huffman and Singleton hit jump shots to push the lead to the biggest of the half, at 24-8.
The second half was much the same, after the Lady Saints took a 33-20 lead into the locker room.
North Georgia went on a 10-0 run early in the second half to put the game away. Leading 44-30 with over 13 minutes left in the game, Huffman hit the front end of a two-shot foul to push the lead to five at 45-30. She then would hit a three-pointer the next trip down the floor to push the lead to 48-30 with 13:04 remaining in the game. Jolley connected on her first thre-pointer of the game at the 12:42 mark to push the lead to 51-30, before Syretha Marble hit a layup and Huffman a free throw to push the lead to 54-30, the biggest lead of the game, with 10:39 remaining in the contest.
North Georgia finished the afternoon shooting 46.3 (25-for-54) percent from the floor, and 38.5 (5-for-13) percent from behind the arc - including a 75 (3-for-4) percent performance in the second half. From the line, the Lady Saints shot 59.1 (13-for-22) percent for the game.
Meanwhile, West Georgia shot just 33.9 (19-for-56) percent from the floor, and were unable to convert any of the seven three-poin attempts taken in the game. The Wolves shot 66.7 (6-for-9) percent from the free throw line.
The Lady Saints won the rebounding battle, 44-29, including grabbing 15 offensive rebounds on the afternoon.
Marble led the way for North Georgia, pouring in a game-high 18 points on 6-for-11 shooting from the floor. She also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. Huffman added 13 points on 5-for-9 shooting from the floor, while Singleton and Jolley each added 11 in the victory. Jolley also grabbed nine rebounds off the bench for the Lady Saints.
West Georgia (0-1) was led by Rita Grayson with 12 points.
North Georgia returns to action Saturday against the host team, the University of Montevallo, at 5:00 pm Eastern time.
