#7 LADY SAINTS DEFEAT LADY HORNETS 78-66

Dahlonega, Ga. - The seventh ranked North Georgia College & State University women's basketball team picked up their second Southern States Athletic Conference win and leveled their record to 5-5 with a win over Southern Polytechnic State University Saturday afternoon in Memorial Gymnasium.

The Lady Saints broke out to an early 16-9 lead midway through the first half, but the Lady Hornets were tenacious in their offense and cut the lead to one at the 9:06 mark with a layup from senior guard Mia Henderson (Detroit, Mich.). North Georgia responded to the threat and went on a 8-0 run capped off by a fast-break score from senior forward Brandi Owen (Cornelia, Ga.). SPSU would not go quietly in the first half though, and cut the lead to 33-31 with a three point buzzer beater from senior guard Melissa Gail (Macon, Ga.).

In the second half, the Lady Saints took charge quickly as they raced out to a 12 point lead five minutes into the half. With the lead, North Georgia never looked back as they climbed to their largest lead in the game when junior forward Jeanine Dorminey (Tifton, Ga.) scored on a layup to give the Lady Saints a 66-50 lead with 5:19 to go in the ball game. A free throw by junior guard Rachel Eley (Detroit, Mich.) cut the North Georgia lead to 10 with 1:31 to go, but that was the closest the Lady Hornets could get in the second half.

North Georgia began the night cold from the field and shot only 38% in the first half, but the Lady Saints finished the game shooting 43% from the field with an outstanding second half. Owen finished as the high scorer for the Lady Saints on the night with 22 points after going 8-11 from the field and 6-8 from the free throw line. Freshman forward Rachael Jolley (Covington, Ga.) finished her night scoring a double-double with 11 rebounds and 15 points for North Georgia.

Two Lady Hornets scored double digits in both points and rebounds. Eley lead SPSU with 20 points and added 10 rebounds to her effort. Henderson also recorded a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.

The Lady Hornets fall to 4-8 overall and 2-3 in the SSAC. SPSU will head to Sumter, Ga. to take on Morris College on December 8 at 6:00 pm. The Lady Saints will take a week off for finals before they play again on December 13 against Emmanuel College at home for their final game of the 2004 year at 6:00 pm.
