Dahlonega, Ga. – Senior forward Brandi Owen (Cornelia, Ga.) led North Georgia College & State University to its eighth straight win as the Lady Saints defeated Southern Polytechnic State University 71-60 Monday night in Marietta.
The Lady Hornets had the lead for most of the first half, as North Georgia was unable to defend the quickness of SPSU. Junior guard Rachel Eley (Detroit, Mich.) led the Lady Hornets attack with 11 points in the first. With eight minutes left to play, freshman forward Rachael Jolley (Covington, Ga.) knocked down a three point shot to tie the score at 16-16. North Georgia jumped out to a 10-point lead with two minutes left and by the end of the half had a 30-22 lead going into the second half.
The Lady Saints jumped out to an eight-point lead five minutes into the second half, but the Lady Hornets jumped back into the ball game and had cut the lead to 39-37 off of a lay-up from senior guard Mia Henderson (Detroit, Mich.). North Georgia then went on a 10-2 run over the next three minutes to make the score 49-49 and put the game out of reach for SPSU.
Owen led the Lady Saints in scoring for the third game in a row with 22 points. Senior guard Katie Schleisman (Suwanee, Ga.) added 11 points and Jolley chipped in 10 points. North Georgia shot 46% (22-for-48) from the field and 89% (24-for-27) from the charity stripe.
Eley was the Lady Hornets top scorer with 20 points. Senior forward Benyetta High (Jonesboro, Ga.) added 16 points and Henderson tossed in 12 and 13 rebounds in the effort. SPSU struggled from the field, shooting 34% (23-for-68) from the field and 13% (1-for-8) from behind the arc.
Both teams play again this Thursday at 6:00 p.m. with North Georgia hosting Berry College for the NGCSU Spirit Night, and the Lady Hornets are traveling to Rome to play Shorter College.
