SAINTS AND BEARCATS SPLIT DOUBLE-HEADER

Greenwood, SC –A two-RBI double into deep left field in the fourth inning of the second game of a PBC doubleheader against North Georgia College & State University to lead the Lander softball team to a 4-1 victory and a split of the PBC twinbill. North Georgia won the first game, 18-7.

In the first game, North Georgia pounded out 15 hits and took advantage of three Lander errors in a game which was called in the fifth inning due to the eight-run rule.

Lander jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning on Colleen Leggieri's three-run homer, but it was all Saints after that. North Georgia scored four runs in the second, two in the third, four in the fourth and eight in the fifth.

For North Georgia, Meigan Grimm went 4-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs; Brittany Cobb went 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBIs; Brittany Barnes went 2-for-3 with three runs and two RBIs; and Candace Shubert went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs. Brooke Kesler went 1-for-3 with two runs and three RBIs.

Saints’ pitcher Rachel Bridges (6-6) earned the win, striking out three, and allowing six earned runs on eight hits in three innings pitched. Lander’s Jenna Kellett (7-11) was the losing pitcher, striking out three, walking three and allowing 10 runs (two earned) on 10 hits in three innings pitched.

In the second game, Amber Yarborough’s hit highlighted a four-run inning and that is all it would take to hold off the Saints. Yarborough’s double scored Keri Davis and Leggieri. Rachel Lawrence and Heather Bishop followed with RBI singles. North Georgia’s Lynsey Thompson went 2-for-4 with one RBI.

Austin Murray (4-7) earned the victory, striking out eight, walking one and allowing one run (none earned) on five hits in six innings pitched. Ashlea Burdette earned her first save of the season, in one inning of work. North Georgia’s Danielle Rainey (2-3) took the loss, striking out one, walking one and allowing four runs (none earned) on six hits in four innings pitched.

North Georgia moved to 15-13 overall, 3-9 in the conference, while Lander moved to 20-24-1 overall and 2-12 in the PBC.
