SEA WARRIORS SPLIT WITH SAINTS
Kaneohe, HI - With light rain steadily falling, the Saints softball team split their doubleheader with Hawaii Pacific University, winning the opener, 11-9 in eight innings, and losing the nightcap, 1-0.
Game one was a seesaw affair, as both teams put on a hitting show, combining for 29 hits in the game. HPU jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead after one inning, getting three straight hits and a two-run double by Anuhea Young. NGCSU responded off a three-run homerun from Krista Bess off HPU starter Dayna Berry. In the fourth, Brittany Barnes knocked another three-run homerun to put the Saints on top. Down 7-6, HPU tied it in the bottom of the inning on another double by Young, scoring Dani Young who reached on an error earlier in the inning. In the bottom of the seventh, trailing 9-7, HPU cut it to one on an RBI-single by Krystal Plunkett, and later tied it as Casey Taylor scored on a wild pitch, sending the game to extra innings.
In the eighth, Lara Seamon's triple plated two runs for the Saints, and the Sea Warriors could not answer in the bottom half, stranding the tying runs on base. Dana Lowery earned the win for the Saints and Courtney Kessel received the loss.
In the nightcap, Kessel came back strong, tossing her fourth shutout of the year, a three-hitter that was called after five innings because of darkness. The freshman struck out nine and walked none, improving to 6-2 on the season. HPU got their lone run in the third inning on an RBI-double by Plunkett.
With the split, the Lady Saints improved to 8-6 overall, and will take BYU Hawaii next, in a doubleheader on Friday, March 17th.
