#4 RAMS SWEEP #11 SAINTS IN OPENING GAME OF CARUSO’S CLASSIC

Dahlonega, Ga. – The fourth ranked University of Mobile defeated #11 North Georgia College & State University 5-0 in the first game and 6-2 in the second to take the first day of softball games at the Caruso’s Classic hosted by NGCSU.

Game 1

Using a four run third inning, the Rams (20-2) took care of business at the plate and sophomore starter Linden Jones allowed the Saints (11-8) only two hits in the game as UM won 5-0. After reaching on an error, freshman center fielder Evelyne Pare stole home to give the Rams a 1-0 lead. A few batters later, junior third baseman Mayret Perez knocked a three run homer over the right field wall to make the score 4-0. MU added one more run in the seventh off of an RBI single from junior left fielder Holly Knowles.

Jones pitched seven strong innings for the win and struck out 11 batters and walked only three. Senior starter Beth Willis took the loss after going seven innings and allowing three earned runs and striking out seven.

The Saints struggled from the field and committed four errors in the loss, which led to two unearned runs.

Game 2

In game two, the Saints managed to put two runs on the board but were unable to keep the UM bats quiet as they pounded out six runs.

A five run first inning put North Georgia behind from the start as a RBI double from junior first baseman Angelica Yrigoyen put UM up 1-0. A two RBI single by freshman second baseman Karine Gagne put the Rams up 3-0 followed by another two RBI double from freshman designated player Jessica McIntyre to close out the inning.

The Saints scored two runs in the fourth inning off of a two RBI home run from junior first baseman Lara Seamon. UM responded in the top of the fifth with a single run to make the score 6-2.

A four run lead was all junior starter Kirby Baxter needed as she pitched seven innings and allowed only one run for the win. Freshman starting pitcher Rachel Bridges took the loss in seven innings of work after allowing six earned runs off of seven hits.

Both teams play again tomorrow in day two of the Caruso’s Classic. The Rams will have the first two games as they take on Lindsey Wilson College at 10:00 p.m., and then Campbellsville University at Noon. The Saints play two in the nightcap as they take on Campbellsville at 4:00 p.m. and Tennessee Wesleyan College at 6:00 p.m.
