#9 SAINTS SCOOT PAST LADY HAWKS

Dahlonega, Ga. – Shutting out Shorter College (2-18, 2-18) in both games, ninth ranked North Georgia College & State University (34-13, 22-2) swept the Southern States Athletic Conference double header Friday evening at the NGCSU Softball Complex.

Game 1

Senior pitcher Beth Willis (Williamson, Ga.) pitched a complete game shutout to lead the Saints to a 3-0 victory in the first game. Willis struck out eight batters and walked only two as she picked up her 22nd win of the season.

North Georgia scored two runs in the second inning, the first off of an RBI bunt single from freshman right fielder Candace Shubert (Colbert, Ga.) and the second from a sacrifice bunt by senior left fielder Niki Keith (Gainesville, Ga.). The final run for North Georgia was scored in the fifth after junior shortstop Lynsey Thompson (Dacula, Ga.) singled to score freshman center fielder Brittany Cobb (Oxford, Ga.).

Hawks sophomore starting pitcher Brandi Smith (Mesa, Ariz.) took the loss after pitching six innings and allowing three earned runs off of seven hits with two strikeouts.

Game 2

North Georgia wasted no time in the second game as they jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first inning. Cobb led the game off with a walk and later scored off of an RBI single by senior second baseman Annie Ball (Marietta, Ga.). Ball would score off of a bases loaded walk to make the score 2-0. One batter later, a two run error would make it a 4-0 ball game before SC closed out the first inning.

The Hawks out-hit the Saints 9-7, but were unable to score until the top of the seventh inning when junior third baseman Ashley Wilkes (Ider, Ala.) sacrificed in junior center fielder Brandy Hutchins (Cedartown, Ga.) to make it a 4-1 ball game. Willis came in and closed out the game to give North Georgia a two game sweep.

Freshman starter Kira Rogers (Woodstock, Ga.) took the loss after going six innings and allowing four earned runs off of seven hits. The Saints used all three pitchers, but sophomore reliever Danielle Rainey (Lawrenceville, Ga.) picked up the win after pitching three innings and scattering four hits.

North Georgia will play again tomorrow as they host Reinhardt College at 2:00 p.m. for their final conference series before the SSAC Tournament. SC will not play again until the tournament begins on April 21.
