#10 SAINTS CHARGE PAST LADY CANES IN SOFTBALL DOUBLE HEADER

Dahlonega, Ga. – Shutting out Georgia Southwestern State University in the first game, 10th ranked North Georgia College & State University held on 3-2 in the second game to sweep the Lady Canes in Southern States Athletic Conference action.

Game 1

In a quick seven inning game, the Saints (27-12, 15-1) took an early lead and defeated the Lady Canes (29-16, 18-4). Freshman center fielder Brittany Cobb (Oxford, Ga.) singled to lead off the game and later scored on a three run double off the bat of senior second baseman Annie Ball (Marietta, Ga.). With three runs in the first inning, North Georgia tacked on another run in the second inning off an RBI single from Cobb to score freshman left fielder Michelle Brock (Loganville, Ga.).

With a four run cushion, senior starting pitcher Beth Willis (Williamson, Ga.) pitched seven innings and only allowed one hit in the game while striking out nine GSW batters for the win. Lady Canes senior starter Katrina Beach (Daytona Beach, Fla.) took the loss after allowing four earned runs off of nine hits with one strike out.

Game 2

In the second game, the Saints got on the board in the third inning after Brock led off the inning with a triple to right center field. She later scored on an RBI single from freshman right fielder Candace Shubert (Colbert, Ga.). Shubert moved to third off a bunt single from Cobb and later scored, along with Cobb, to give the Saints a 3-0 lead after three innings of play.

GSW junior first baseman Crystal Currinton (Lawrenceville, Ga.) led off the bottom of the seventh with a solo shot to left field to cut North Georgia's lead to two. Junior shortstop Lynne Valdes (West Palm Beach, Fla.) singled and later scored to cut the lead to 3-2. Saints pitcher Willis forced a line out to end the game with the game tying run on third base.

Willis picked up her second win of the day and improved to 15-1. Junior starting pitcher DeJay West (Cedartown, Ga.) took the loss after pitching three innings and allowing three earned runs off of four hits.

North Georgia will travel to Mt. Vernon on Saturday to face Brewton-Parker at 2:00 p.m. The Lady Canes next game will be April 12th against Thomas University on the road at 2:00 p.m.
