NGSCU FARES WELL IN CHIC-FIL-A COLLEGIATE
Eastwood claims first title

Augusta, GA– Jacob Eastwood claimed North Georgia College & State University’s first fall title of the year in tennis, when he won the Men’s Singles Flight 3 in the Chic-Fil-A Collegiate Championships.

After receiving a bye in the opening round, Eastwood defeated second-seeded Arthur Figueiro, of Augusta State, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5.  In the semifinals, he defeated Georgia College & State University’s Melvin Smith 7-5, 1-6, 6-4. In the championship match he defeated Igor Vasconcellos of Augusta State 6-3, 6-3 to claim the title.

Gustavo Carballal lost his opening round match to top-seeded Matt Bellenchia 6-4, 4-6, 2-6.  He was able to rebound in the back draw, defeating Rob Stephens of Queen’s 6-4, 6-0.  He followed that up with a default over Wyatt Boylston from USC Aiken (no-show), following that with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Luis Ortiz from Wingate University to claim the championship of the Men’s Singles Flight 4 Back Draw. 

Vlad Lumezeanu lost his opening match to Brandon Hebbard of USC Aiken 6-2, 6-4 in Men’s Singles Flight 5.  In the consolation he defeated Felipe Sobriho of Newberry, and then he won the championship of the back draw by defeating ABAC’s Jacob Sauls 6-2, 6-2. 

Justin Davis won his quarterfinal match against top-seeded Pedro De Angli from ABAC 7-6 (6), 6-2.  Alex Rodas defeated Tony Bertucci from Georgia College & State University 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.  This set up a semifinal match-up between Davis and Rodas in the Men’s Singles Flight 6.  Rodas claimed the victory over his teammate 6-4, 7-6 (5) to move to the championship match.  He fell in the finals to Newberry’s Scott Gates 1-6, 1-6.

In men’s doubles action, Carballal and Lumezeanu won their opening match against Fernando Campos (Shorter) and Drew Hendricks (Queen’s) 8-3.  They fell to top-seeded team from Augusta State (Frederico Mendez and Igor Vasconcellos) 5-8.

In women’s action, Lilia Tzvetanova lost her second round match against Nathalia Rodrigues from Augusta State 0-6, 4-6.  She rebounded in the back draw to defeat Elly Toth of USC Aiken 6-4, 6-3, before losing to Autise Mortimer of Newberry 6-4, 3-6, 2-6. 
Maria Dreaden
lost to Isabelle Criedler from Newberry 6-0, 6-1, before rebounding in the back draw by defeating Hollyn Aiberghini from Wingate 6-4, 6-1.  She lost to Lindsay King 3-6, 3-6 in the semifinals of the back draw of Women’s Singles Flight Three.

Catie Murphy defeated second-seeded Jiuliana Luconi from Shorter 7-5, 6-2 in her opening round match.  She then defeated Pierce Dillard from Wingate 6-1, 6-1 in the second round.  She fell to Sarah Jegat of Augusta State 6-1, 6-1 in the championship of the Main Draw of the Women’s Singles Flight Four. 

Jenni Bridges won her opening round match against Rhonda Cooper from UNC Pembroke, 6-1, 6-4.  She lost to Norma Rovira of Augusta State 2-6, 0-6 in the second round.  In the semifinals of the consolation, she defeated Brittany Ramsey of USC Aiken 6-2, 6-1.  In the finals, she lost to Bethany Poppe of Newberry 4-6, 7-6 (7), 1-6 in Women’s Singles Flight Five.

Mallory Perloff entered the tournament as the second seed, defeating Katie Gerth of USC Aiken 6-4, 6-1 in the opening round.  She lost to Kristen McCulley of Queen’s 2-6, 2-6.  She was able to rebound in the consolation, defeating Jennifer McPherson in the semifinals 6-2, 6-3.  She fell to Natalie Hudson of Newberry 3-6, 3-6 in Women’s Singles Flight Six.
Bridges and Perloff reached the finals of the Women’s Doubles Flight Three before falling to Aline Komch and Jiuliana Liana from Shorter 4-8.
