SAINTS WIN FIRST PBC MATCH WITH 3-2 OVERTIME WIN OVER PATRIOTS
Dahlonega, Ga. – Senior midfielder Kent Thornton scored 2:40 into overtime as North Georgia College & State University claimed a 3-2 victory over Francis Marion University, Saturday afternoon (Oct. 8) in Peach Belt Conference men's soccer action.
North Georgia is now 6-4-2 overall and 1-3-1 in the Peach Belt, while FMU falls to 7-6-0 and 0-3-0.
Freshman David Simpson gave Francis Marion a 1-0 advantage in the 21st minute with his second goal of the season. Four minutes later, the Saints answered with a tying goal off a corner kick from current PBC Player of the Week, senior midfielder Rene Alvarez.
Sophomore Jonathan Bartomioli scored his team-leading seventh goal in the 38th minute giving the Patriots a 2-1 lead at halftime. North Georgia again knotted the match 2-2 with an own goal in the 62nd minute when a Patriot defender knocked the ball in his their goal.
North Georgia out shot the Patriots 22-8, including 13-4 after intermission.
FMU senior goalkeeper Jonathan Runion set a school career record with his 59th start in goal, and he compiled 10 saves, his fourth double-digit total of the year.
The Saints will take on USC Aiken next Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at the NGCSU Soccer Complex. FMU will play at USC Aiken, Wednesday at 7 p.m.
