SAINTS FALL TO VIKINGS 5-1 IN NAIA REGION XIII QUARTERFINAL
MOUNT BERRY, Ga…. Robert Mueller scored four goals and needed less than a half to record a hat trick as his Berry College Vikings rolled to a 5-1 victory over North Georgia in an NAIA Region XIII men's soccer tournament quarterfinal match at Ford Soccer Field in Mount Berry Saturday.
Mueller's first goal came in the 14th minute off a rebound off the North Georgia defense after a shot by Adam Kiefer. Mueller, who was named the Southern States Athletic Conference's Player of the Year earlier in the week, gave Berry a 2-0 lead with a run through the middle that resulted in a goal in the 19 th minute.
North Georgia cut the lead in half 34 minutes into the match when Kelvon Morris, who had checked into the match just a few minutes earlier, scored on a blast from about 20 yards out over the head of Berry goalkeeper Byron Schueneman, who had slipped on the turf. Rene Alvarez was credited with an assist on the play.
Mueller went to work again in the 42 nd minute, firing a rocket past Saints goalkeeper Vince Neal after accepting a cross from Tommy Maurer, giving Berry (19-3 overall) a 3-1 advantage, which the Vikings took into the intermission.
Neither team could find the net again until Mueller scored from just in front of the goal in the 80 th minute. David Bell then put an exclamation point on the victory with an 89 th minute goal on an assist from Greg Young.
The win avenged Berry's lone Southern States Athletic Conference loss of the season, which came at the hands of North Georgia Sept. 18 in Dahlonega. The score of that match was 1-0.
