GC&SU (9-4, 6-1) was up 23-17 midway through the first half. North Georgia (7-5, 4-3) cut the lead to 23-20 with eight minutes left, but the Bobcats went on a 16-8 run over the next five minutes to go up by 11. The Saints got as close as eight points with a minute left in the half, but a three with two seconds left by senior guard Andre Smith put GC&SU up 46-35 heading into the locker room.
The second half opened with the Bobcats stretching their lead to 15 in the first minute. The Saints battled back and found themselves down 58-56 with 12:55 to play. North Georgia took their first lead of the half off of a lay-up from senior post Marcus Robinson to go up 65-64. The lead did not last for long after senior guard Bryan Harrison chipped in a bucket to put the Bobcats up for good.
The Saints struggled from the field, shooting only 35 percent (25-for-63) for the game and 21 percent (4-for-19) from behind the arc. GC&SU shot a respectable 45 percent (26-for-58) from the field and a blazing 58 percent (7-for-12) from three-point land.
Five Bobcats scored in double-figures, led by Harrison with 18 and senior forward Jeremy Maryweather adding 17. Smith poured in 12 points followed by sophomore center Aaron Clark with 11 and senior guard Ronnie Dennis with 10. Clark had an outstanding defensive game as well, blocking three shots with eight rebounds.
Junior guard Matt Causey led the Saints attack with a game high 22 points and six assists. Junior forward Mark Trust had another solid performance with 14 points, three blocks, and four rebounds. Freshman post Anthony Rowe came off the bench and brought down a game high 12 rebounds to go along with nine points.
Up next for North Georgia is a Wednesday night game against Clayton State University in Morrow. GC&SU will host Lander University at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. |
