SAINTS OUTLAST SENATORS 70-66
Montgomery - Matt Causey connected on four key free throws down the stretch to help North Georgia defeat Auburn University Montgomery 70-66 at the Physical Education Complex Saturday evening.
The two teams traded the lead 12 times during the game, with the Saints taking the last lead, 68-66, with just 17.5 seconds left in regulation.
The late lead exchange was made possible by the Senators only dressing eight players, and running into foul trouble late.
North Georgia shot 45.7 (21-for-46) percent from the field, while shooting just 30.8 (4-for-13) percent from behind the three-point line. The Saints shot 88.9 (24-for-27) from the free throw line to seal the victory.
AUM shot 40.9 (27-for-66) percent from the floor, while the Senators shot 31.6 (6-for-19) percent from behind the three-point line.
AUM won the rebounding battle, as they outrebounded North Georgia 34-33.
The Senators, on the losing end for the fourth consecutive game, made a great effort on defense to slow one of the best offensive teams in the Southern States Athletic Conference.
"I thought we did a great job defensively with our effort," said AUM Head Coach Larry Chapman. "They are a great offensive team and I am proud of the effort we had against North Georgia."
Causey led the way for North Georgia (9-5, 3-3 SSAC) with 22 points, while Canaan Brown and Bryce Brickhouse combined for 15 points each for the Saints.
Joseph Manuel led AUM with a game-high 22 points, while Ryan Powell added 15 points in the loss. Derrick Russell added 13 points and 11 rebounds.
AUM (4-8, 2-4 SSAC) looks to rebound Monday as they travel to Waleska, Ga. to take on Reinhardt College at 7 pm. The Saints return to action tonight at home as they take on Shorter College at 8:00 p.m.
