Antione Whelchel begins his second season as a graduate assistant for the North Georgia College & State University men's basketball program.

Whelchel comes to the Saints from Murray State University, where he was a 2004 selection to the Ohio Valley Conference All-Tournament Team. During his time at Murray State, he was named the team's co-MVP during senior season after helping the Racers to a 28-6 record, an Ohio Valley Conference tournament title and a trip to the NCAA Tournament. He was also named co-captain of the team that season.

During his career at Murray State, he amassed over 1,300 career points and 690 rebounds (10th on the all-time list). He currently ranks 20th on the all-time scoring list, and tenth on the all-time assists list. Along with his co-MVP award, Whelchel also was named Best Defender and won the Racer's Coach's Award.

Whelchel is a graduate of East Hall High School where he ranks third on the all-time scoring list. He was a three-time Lanierland All-Tournament team selection and two-time All-Area Player of the Year in junior and senior seasons. During his junior and senior seasons, he was a two-time Gainesville-Hall County Male Athlete of the Year Finalist. In his senior season, Whelchel was a McDonald's All-America Team nominee. He is the only person in East Hall history to have over 2,000 career points and 1,100 career rebounds.

He is the youngest player ever to be inducted into the Northeast Georgia Sports Hall of Fame.

Whelchel graduated from Murray State in 2004 with a Bachelor of Science in Health and Physical Education.
