North Georgia back in action next week at West Florida
Box Score
DAHLONEGA, GA – North Georgia College & State University tied the game up late, but allowed a pair of unearned runs in the ninth inning to fall 7-5 at the hands of UNC Pembroke Saturday afternoon in Peach Belt Conference action.
North Georgia used consecutive two-out singles, as well as a wild pitch to tie the game in the eighth, but UNCP used a leadoff error and a pair of intentional walks to load the bases in the ninth, before Keith Whitman’s game-winning sacrifice fly and a two-out RBI single from Stuart Champion.
An error on a routine fly ball to left field allowed leadoff hitter Rob Flanigan to reach in the bottom of the ninth, but the Braves' closer Jon Rivera retired the next three batters to seal the 7-5 Pembroke victory.
North Georgia recorded 10 hits with four individual multi-hit performances, but stranded 10 runners on the base paths in the two-run defeat.
Kevin Morrison’s RBI single in the fourth gave North Georgia their first lead of the contest at 2-1, and the Saints tacked two more runs up on the board in the fifth on an Anders Oster RBI single and a double steal to take a 3-run lead into the sixth.
The Braves would fight right back in the seventh and utilized a single, walk and fielding error to load the bases and cut the lead down to just one run on an ensuing two-run single from Jon-Jon Mirra and then took the lead back two batters later on a one-out double by Morales that plated both Mirra and Derek Funk for a 5-4 advantage.
Garrett Lussi (0-2) suffered the tough-luck loss for the Saints after surrendering a pair of unearned runs in the ninth.
North Georgia (16-13, 8-7 PBC) will hit the road for a three-game set at West Florida before heading to Francis Marion for another Peach Belt Conference series.
